Hello Everyone,
I am a new registered nurse and just received my license# on jun 20th. I have been interested in becoming a visiting nurse for some time now due to the different types of training that is offered to new grads. I was told that visiting nurse agencies train new grads on various clinical nursing skills and it is not limited to specific skills such as wound care or IV therapy. I was just interviewed for a Visiting nurse position with a nearby visiting nurse agency. It was my first registered nurse interview and I was so nervous I didn't know what to expect. I've been feeling a little bummed out, not to say that I bombed my interview, just feeling like I could have hid my nerves and come off a bit more confident. Well, long story short; I was interviewed by a nurse director and a visiting nurse. The nurse director asked me some behavioral interview style questions, which I tried my best to answer. Towards the end of the interview she told me that they were not hiring now but that I could come in on Monday and shadow a nurse all day from 8am-6pm, she also mentioned that the nurse I'd be shadowing would be from a similar background as me (bi-lingual) and who started off as a visiting nurse. She then told me we would take it from there once I shadowed this nurse. I'm a bit confused because she is telling me that they are not hiring but asking me if I could come in on Monday and we will take it from there? I don't know what this could mean or if anyone's had a similar experience? Any input will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have no idea what a visiting nurse is. The shadowing though can be good. You can get a good idea about being a nurse with them and they can get to know you. If anything if they get a position open soon and got to know you they might call you back before someone else.

visiting nurses work ifor home health agency, my specialty performing intermittent visits in clients homes or shift care. if you truly bombed the interview, they would not have invited you back for a job shadow experience, allowing you to see what the work entails and if you would truly be interested + happy in home care. i often keep applications on file for future job openings.
moved to our home health nursing --look at posts here for ideas what home heatlh is all about.

She would not have offered you the shadow opportunity if she was not interested in you as a potential employee. She will probably query the person you shadow as to her impression of you, so put you best foot forward. Don't be afraid to ask questions as the day progresses and show your interest in the job. Good luck.

I can tell a lot more about someone by the questions they ask than by what they seem to think they know. Do some reading in the HH forum to get a feel for what to expect. Start with the stickies at the top of the forum and really try to gauge whether this is the right field for a new grad.
