why is it so gosh darn hard to find rns to do pdn on my case? we are so short staffed on my vent patient's case it isn't funny. i do the scheduling and am the case coordination. i have ads everywhere -- newspaper, online, websites -- and just cannot find anyone to hire on with us!! we live in wisconsin so we don't work for an agency, just independent. a few months back, one rn replied to my newspaper ad and we hired her on the spot. we still need 1-2 more rn bodies to help out this 24/7 case. how to find rns who want to do pdn? the state pays well!!

RNs typically don't like to do private duty because most employers do not pay enough. It is usually easier to find LPNs to do home care in general.

Have you posted on professionalhomecareproviders.com. You can list your case there and hopefully nurses will contact you about the case.

Im a LVN and just took my RN boards a couple days ago (live in texas sorry) but I have worked with a kiddo on a vent for a year now. i dont know the rules in your state but maybe looking for an LVN with vent experience would fill your need? I know its hard cause you want and RN and I was talking with my pt.s mom about how RN's do know more, but i feel like I became very comfortable with this pt even as an LVN. I'm actually her primary nurse.
there's also craigslist but obviously be careful there : ) good luck!
also could you try going through a staffing agency to get someone in? like a dr.'s office would if they were looking to hire someone? I've done a direct hire thing before through staffing agency.

how about professional nursing organizations or state nursing newsletters (unless its not allowed)?
i'm surprised about the lack of responses.

Although it was through agency, when I resigned the high tech vent case I worked - they had a very hard time replacing me.
Maybe it is the vent aspect. Vents scare some nurses.
But I agree with another response - the problem may be with finding RN's. LPN's seem much more prevalent in private duty or home shift work. As a RN who worked home shift work for several yrs, I often got vibes that I was doing "an LPN's job". Frequently it was suggested I change to supervisory/management work. But I wanted shift work and did NOT want the hassle of management or supervision for various reasons.
Unfairly, I think RN's who do home shift work or private duty are considered to be losing their skills or stepping down. Many of the cases are very high tech! I actually gained new skills that I did not have from all my years of hospital nursing!

Why is that?
The misconception that "RNs doing private duty or home shift work are losing their skills" seems to be rampant.
You said it best! These cases involve higher level nursing skills and processes. I learned more in private duty / home care nursing than any place else!

Where in WI are you? If you don't want to say this publicly, please, PM me. I have a couple of ideas, but it would help to know where you are.
