Finally on Board with the VA****

Hi allnurses,

After applying for almost two years, I've finally been offered a position with the VA :) I'm so excited, and I thank everyone on this site. The information is priceless, dealing with the VA is much easier when you know ahead of time what is to come next.

For those that work for the VA: Does anyone know if their tuition reimbursement covers all the cost for an advanced nursing degree? How many weekends a month do they generally require? Anyone know how the Loan Repayment works? My husband and I would like to expand our family in the near future (not til my probationary period is over) anyone know what kind of package is offered for maternity leave?

I thank the Lord for all of the helpful information :)

Congratulations..I'm sure the wait was well worth it. Please continue to post your experience is helpful for those of us who are still going through the process.

Congrats! I too am a new hire in the VA system and can't wait to start! I applied only once in November 2011 and got a call in January for interview and was offered a position last week (with 8 months experience at a teaching hospital). Does anyone know what the timeline is before transferring throughout the VA system to other hospitals?

Congrats :) From what I have read on this forum I believe most Va nurses said the wait is generally 1 year, which is standard for most hospitals :)

punkhardcoreRN - I don't know the wait time for transferring but I do know the new hire probation is 2 years from what I was told by HR for the position I'm being considered for but that culd mean for being employed w/the VA overall. Once you get in and settled I'm sure you could ask around. Good luck and congrats on your new position!

I can't wait to get back in with the gov't. I was honorably discharged in 2010 from UASF after 6 years, but was hoping to maybe take a comission as a ANG flight RN while working w/ VA system. That is, of course if my girlfriend/fiancee/wife is cool with my plans to be mobile!
