Experience with Extendicare?

I work for one of their SNFs I wouldn't worry about the Parent company, you would do better asking the nurses who actually work in the facility how the facility is. The parent company gives out training materials, policy, ect......what is enforced and how the place is managed is up to the individual facility and adminstrator

I would try and ask local too. Each facility is different. I do like the programs that they have in place. There is a program or form for everything. You know how you hear of people asking about a policy for this or that? They have one! Some may think this is a bad thing (over regulated or managed) but I liked it. I went to another place and they had no real organization.

Each facility or region will be run differently depending on management style..they type of staff etc.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever worked for an Extendicare facility? I am a new grad and like thousands of others in Central Ohio cannot find a job. I am thinking about applying to Extendicare but I would rather be unemployed than hate my job. Feel free to PM me!

I worked for two years at an Extendicare nursing home. It was the absolute worst facility I have ever been around.

Extedicare's policy for the two facilities I have worked at is to save money by understaffing and undersupplying. This routinely results in them getting deficiencies on state audits. They then fire a few staff members and pay the few thousand in fines. This is far more cost effective than, say, hiring staff. The DON and ADON offices have revolving doors.

They recently went to far with this at one facility and they had a couple deaths, abuse cases, and bad injuries. The state threatened to pull the Medicare certificate, but in the end, it was the same thing. They fired a bunch of staff, including the administrator, filed a bunch of paperwork, paid about 10 grand in fines, and kept their cert.

They roll through RNs like crazy. The CNAs who have been there for a while know this, so they don't listen to a word anyone says. They refuse RN requests with impunity right to their faces.

Oh, and at those facilities, the nurses and CNAs serve all the meals. So if you work day shift, a full two hours of your shift is slinging hash. They left one nurse on the floor during meals. Nightmare.

There are some good people working there, but it sure is tough.
