Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I have heard a ton of different stories about Excelsior college. Is it worth going to excelsior or is it a scam? I just want to make the correct choice. All feedback is appreciated.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

It's a highly respected accredited program with NLNAC center of excellence for several years (very few schools achieve that status).

If you live in CA you cannot work as a nurse as an EC graduate.

Several states require additional clinical practice (such as AZ) some states will only license by endorsement (I think currently VA,MD, DE & IL but check EC website to be certain) and not initial license by examination. Other states will only consider LPN to ASN/RN candidates for licensing (medic to ASN/RN are not eligible). GA requires additional supervised clinical practice for medic to RN candidates before eligible for a license.

If you are a motivated independent learner you can be very successful. At least 2 AN staffers are EC alum including Pixie RN. There is a dedicated forum for this program with a wealth of information under FAQ.

Specializes in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, C-NPT, FP-C.

I just signed up for Excelsior and am looking at all the rules and regs carefully. So far it seems good. I have worked with 3 medics who are now working RNs (one an ADN that moved from the ER as a paramedic to an ICU nurse when he graduated and passed NCLEX) and one more medic I used to work with that is in the process of doing EC. No complaints from them other than the clinical exam is rather hard. I'm looking forward to continuing and getting my RN from them

Thank you all for the info

And do not confuse Excelsior with The College Network (TCN), Distance Learning Systems Indiana (DLSI), Rue Education and other publication companies. These publishing companies are just that, they sell study material and add 2-3 times the cost of a degree from Excelsior. You can get everything you need from Excelsior and other places like studygroup101.com.
