My daughter had to do a paper on this same topic, some of the ideas I had for her were: blood transfusions for people of certain religions, rights of family to continue feeding tubes (think Teri Schriavo), abortion, organ donation. Hope this helps or gets ya thinking on the track you need. Good luck!!

Cloning. There is a company that will clone your dog or cat for about $50,000. They've done several and MSN.com had an article about a woman who talked about the similaries in her new cloned cat compared to the original cat the DNA came from. This article was several months ago. Are human organs next? Need a new heart, we'll grow you a new one and have it ready in 6 months. Ethical?

Use of stem cells for treatment of neurological diseases is very big right now. Legislatures are debating laws over whether or not stem cells can be harvested from aborted fetuses without the permission of the mom.

As an information management student I can also tell you that there is debate about assigning a unique medical record number to every person, just like a social security number that would be yours for your lifetime. Every person's medical record would be stored in a huge supercomputer for ready access whenever needed. The military currently puts all a soldier's medical history on a smart card which is also their ID so where ever they are stationed, medical personnel has only to put the smart card into a reader to have immediate access to that person's medical history. Implanted microchips under a person's skin containing their medical history are also being trialed. Will we be numbers in a huge supercomputer or people with names in the future? The potential for abuse of confidentiality is huge. Just who will be allowed access to this information?

Here are a couple of things to think about, to help get you started:

1. Have you looked after a patient where there was conflict or disagreement about treatment? This could be between health care staff, the team and family members, or between family members. If you look at the disagreement, there may be an ethical issue at the root of it (eg withdrawal of care), and that can serve as a starting point.

2. Has there been a case in the media where a medical issue made you feel strongly one way or the other? Chances are there's an ethical dimension involved (eg Terry Schiavo, late term abortion, underage contraception).

All you need is a starting point - an issue that you're sufficiently interested in to research. If nothing's come up for you yet, type "medical ethics" or "health care ethics" into a search engine, and read until something strikes your interest.

Good luck!
