essential tremor

Is any nurses out there that have essential tremor? How do you deal with it? I dream to become a lpn and I am working towards . What medications do you take? How to draw blood?

We cannot discuss medicine here at AN. As per the Terms of Service we cannot give medical advice. We can discuss how other nurses have dealt with this disability.

I have a tremor, but I don't take medication for it. I found that if I don't concentrate as hard it lessens. I think it's just practice makes perfect. You will find what works for you. :p

I have hand tremors, but mine are medication-related. I find that they get worse when I'm really tired, so it's best if I can do tasks requiring fine motor coordination in the morning and early afternoon. Your mileage may vary.

I have ET. My GP gave me one med for it, but the dose was not adequate. I went to a neurologist, who checked me out---neuro exam, EEG, MRI, I don't remember what else. Now I am on two different meds, have been on three in the past. I avoid caffeine, decongestants, getting over tired, and muscle fatigue. Not presently working, so haven't had to draw blood. Have found that for similar tasks, that bracing my dominant hand/arm on a stable surface helps.

I was wondering if any one else became so aware of their tremo that they found themselves consciously trying to control their arm movements? I've found myself doing this and my arms become so tense they are actually sore. That and the movement ends up looking like a mini earthquake.

I have essential tremor. I currently take a beta blocker that was prescribed for this. It doesn't eliminate my hand tremors, but it really helps decrease them. I've tried coming off the beta blocker, but found that the tremors interfere too much with my daily activities & my work (ex: drawing up medications w/a needle when your hands are trembling and having your coworkers & pts look at you funny is not cool).
