ER terminology

Published

I am a student working on a paper for my recent ER experience. Some definitions I am having a difficult finding in books or online are:

1. How to decide if patient is emergent, non-urgent, or urgent.

2. Algorithm

3. MICN

4. Base station

Any explanation/help/resource would be greatly appreciated!

Specializes in ER, ICU.

Google "triage" for #1. You questions seem more related to EMS, include that in your search.

Specializes in Critical Care.

#1 is dealing with triage. #2 is basically a decision tree on how to treat a specific problem. #3 is Mobile intensive care nursery. #4 base station can be a few things. Probably meant to you as either the EMS agency's headquarters or the medic crew's post.

Specializes in CVICU, education.

#3 is a Mobile Intensive Care Nurse. The term means different things in different regions, but is usually a nurse with additional training to provide care during transport or provide orders to EMS personnel over the radio/phone.

#4 A Base Station is a designation usually given to a hospital emergency department that is authorized to give orders over the phone or radio to EMS personnel providing care in the field.

Hope this helps ;)
