Hello all. I am not a psych nurse, I work in med/surg/tele. Just was wondering if the inpatient psychiatric population has had there share of rapid response/code blues. In that setting, how do u handle the other patients (milieu management)? Also, can a patient be admitted with ongoing MRSA infection?

I guess it depends on the type of facility/unit and it's staffing capabilities.
Have anywhere/any type of facility in mind?

Yes, we do take care of pts. with MRSA infections.....
Yes, we do have codes.......we are trained in handling our psych codes...during a code one of us will direct all other pts. to another area while one calls the doc, gets an order for a med, the other members of the team are with the pt.
Of course, depending on the situation, each code is handled accordingly.....
hope this helps

There can be a medical code too. We had a few where I used to work. Psych codes happened now and then too, although not every day.
What happens with the rest of the patients is that a part of the staff gathers the patients into the day room (those that are out in the milieu) and if they've noticed something is happening, tells them what's going on. The other patients do tend to care. Psych patients tend to become family if they're together awhile. They need to know what's happening and need updates, and might need debriefing when it's all over.
