Nurses:

I am looking to do some reading over the holidays and was curious on your opinions. I want to find a good book in some way abstractly related to nursing. Fiction, Non fiction, any genre, what books have you read that have influenced your thinking or acting as a nurse in some way. Anything for ethics, patient care, etc. All suggestions are welcome and please share why!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Welcome to Allnurses.com! I have not read this particular book, but many people have offered positive feedback about Nursing Against the Odds by Suzanne Gordon.

Look for the books by Atul Gwande. He is writing from the perspective of the doctor, but is focus is mostly on the patients, and it is something we can all relate to easily. They are all recent, and can be found in most public libraries.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Another book that comes to mind is The House of God, written by Samuel Shem. It is satirical, set in the 1970s and written from the perspective of medical interns.

Specializes in ICU.

I second anything by Atul Gawande. The Checklist Manifesto, or his new one Being Mortal.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

Try "Brain on Fire" by Susanna Cahalan. She was mis-diagnosed and near death till a SIMPLE test was done. She is not a nurse, but I learned a great deal reading this book.
