Eating or Bathroom?

I guess when nature calls,you gotta go.I definely would recommend taking her to the restroom ,or you might end up with more work due to a possible accident!

THis can be a tough one-of course everyone deserves assistance when needed-however how fair is is it to stop feeding another resident to accomodate this one? We always put these folks on a bowel and bladder program and they are toileted prior to each meal even if they say they don't think they really need to go.A urology consult can help,too.If the resident is alert and oriented maybe they can be reasoned with- but this can be difficult in LTC because these people all seem to suffer from the "Me- me -me" syndrome.Bottom line (and we have had problems with this) If a resident asks to be toileted then they must be toileted no matter what their tolieting program states.To do otherwise is neglectful...

The only thing you can do is take her to the br. Not doing so is just wrong and mean. I have Crohn's and ulcerative colitis and alot of times when I start eating I have to go.

Put yourself in the resident's shoes. If you had to go and depended on someone else taking you, wouldn't it greatly upset you if they said no? How will that pt feel if they are told no and have an accident? Alot of residents would be humiliated.

I do LTC PRN and we have one pt that q 30 mins will ask to go to the br. What we have done is talk to her because she's lonely. She did have a consult and everything was deemed normal. She usually forgets that she has to go and she's never been incontinent. We have her on an q 2 hour schedule and document the times.

When working med surg, it never fails, every pt needs to potty right as we are passing supper trays even if we ask before they come.

When you gotta go, you gotta go.
