Dumb question....ADN program

Hey guys,

I am looking online tonight at a couple of community colleges in my area. I am an LPN and want to get my RN badly. But I've noticed that the requirements are that I would of had A & P I-II, Nutrition and Human Growth and Development within the last 5 years. I graduated LPN school in 2000 and had taken these classes. Does that mean that I won't get credit for them and have to retake all of them again? Any help would be wonderful!

If the community college has a 5-year rule on certain prerequisite classes, then it means that you must retake the classes if over 5 years has elapsed since you last took the class. Good luck!

Then I guess I won't go that route! I'm not going to retake (spend money) on classes that I've already taken and passed.

I would contact the school because some of them allow you to do a NLN or Excellsior exams rather than retaking the classes. I had two schools that waived my 20 yo A&P1 because I got an A in A&P2 within the time frame. I won't hurt to ask and while I am totally not in favor of re-doing things I've already paid for and completed it would be a shame not to pursue your RN for something that you could probably do in one semester. At a CC it probably wouldn't cost more than $1,500 which is peanuts in the big picture. Good luck.

My friend had really ancient pre reques. He applied to a bridge (LVN to RN) program with a "strict" policy on this & they totally let him slide! I would contact the school.

The A&P I and II that I have taken are the same A&P that the RN students have taken also. I stopped at LPN. I did have labs with the classes also.

I've tried to call and email the college today, but no luck. Must not work on Fridays! :chuckle

At all of the community college RN and LPN programs in my area, both types of students take the exact same college level A&P I & II classes. There are no supposedly 'easier' diploma-level A&P classes for the LPN students to take. :rolleyes:

Most schools that I have seen do have that 5 year rule...I am under the same situation....and I passed Anatomy/Physiology (2 classes)/Microbiology, but the community college here has a strict rule that if you retake ANY of the sciences they will take points off your science GPA because they consider it a retake even if you fall under the 5 year rule and passed them 1st time around....Lucky me huh....I didn't really have a problem retaking the classes because the knowledge can't hurt me, but only help me....but having to retake them period is hurting my GPA because of the dumb rule....

I'm usually pretty pliable with school rules because I've learned that even though "we are the customers" that doesn't mean much in nursing school, lol. However this stupid rule would have me climbing the tower! Isn't it bad enough that they are making you re-take the class, spend your money, imo waste your time but they are also going to penalize your grade? What a crock!!

I don't think the classes are supposedly easier. Here, the LPN diploma A&P just doesn't have a lab versus college level A&P which does.

At the community college in my area if you took Basic A&P then you can get by with A&P I and get out of A&P II if you scored high enough in A&P Basic, and I made an A in basic so I pray I can get out of A&P II. I am taking Micro and Chemistry online this summer, I have to take a challenge exam and I am curious about that test.I am an LPN going for my RN. I also may have to take the PSB and am wondering if there is any book at all out there that will help me prepare to take that one, I have heard its real hard, any suggestions? And does anyone know if I will have to take the PSB and a challenge exam to transition into RN program? I have a meeting with my advisor comming up but any input from others is helpful, TKS

I am one of the people who took 'diploma level' A&P at a private vocational school while attending an LVN program. I am concurrently enrolled in both college level A&P I and A&P II with labs, both in this same semester. In my opinion, the college level A&P is much easier than the diploma-level A&P because I have more time to study between tests. In LVN school I was expected to take a quiz every few days and a major test every week. With this college-level A&P, I now have 2-4 weeks notice of any major tests, which amounts to ample studying time.
