Dropped out of ADN program to go into ABSN program

Published

So I am kind of in a unique situation. I applied to an ABSN program in 2012 and unfortunately did not get in so I then applied to an ADN program and started this past Fall. Just as one last effort I actually applied to the ABSN program again around the time I started in the other program. Crazy enough during the middle of the ADN semester I found out I was accepted into the ABSN program. I decided to finish out the semester and even received an A in the course.

But I guess my question is has anybody else been in a similar situation? I felt really confident in my ADN program and was wondering if ADN and ABSN programs are somewhat structured the same. I know there is a lot more courses and materials I will get in the ABSN but am I okay to feel confident going into this or should I basically just forget everything and go in expecting something completely different?

You will learn more theory and it will be hyper accelerated compared to the ADN program. I would PERSONALLY recommend going for your BSN over your associates because that will lead to more opportunities. I would recommend also that you ask if you could waive some classes that you've already taken.

I agree with the above... having a BSN will help tremendously. There is no nursing shortage, you will need all the help you can get as a new grad. The bottom line with the BSN/ADN debate is this: If there are two people applying for the exact same job with the exact same resume except for one having a BSN and the other having an ADN and only one can be called in for an interview- the BSN will get the call. BSNs make hospitals look better and there is research saying that BSN nurses may provide better care.

Good luck and have fun in your new program :)

Well I'm am definitely going to go into the ABSN program. But my major question is that since I did so well in the ADN program should I expect to be able to do the same in ABSN?

ABSN is accelerated. It's completely different than an associates. Chances are though, you should be fine with the ABSN since a lot of it will be a refresher.

Go for it! Better now than getting Bsn later;)

Getting the BSN is a better choice. I'm glad you got in. You will learn more theoretically, which was mentioned above. Since the BSN is accelerated, it's safe to assume it will be harder, however nursing school is hard on a whole. Best of luck on your schooling!
