this is my dream!!!

Hi, I'm new to this site, and I'm posting here like many others, with the same nursing student questions! I start nursing school this January...and i have alot of questions and fears about nursing, however, my strongest interest in fields is OB/GYN! i love all of it, the NICU, L&D, Post partum!

I hope there is a good chance to start on one of these floors as a new grad! however i hear these are popular fields and hard to get into right away. :-( i also hear how its good to start out on a med/surg type floor. This does not interest me in teh slightest. I sit up for hours watching l&d shows and baby stories on TV! haha! with this dream that i will be there one day. what are my chances right out of school? there are currently 4 hospitals with a l&d floor here in Tucson AZ. does that up my chances?

also, i feel almost like i should be willing to work other floors first. but to be honest, i fear having to do that. it serves to interest what so ever to me. yea, there is lots i can learn and things i would find interesting, but it almost breaks me heart to not try and persue a career in ob/gyn. i read all of ur posts and i cry, both tears of joy and some of sadness! but i love it. it feels so far like a passion! i know once i start nursing school ill experience other floors, and maybe pick up a new interest. but this is in my heart.

im sorry if im the hundredth thousandth person who has posted something similar to this! any advice or info is great! otherwise thanks for just reading about my dream!

get yourself a job working as a tech/aide on an OB unit. You stand a great chance of simply being moved into an RN position after you graduate. Good luck! :)

i have thought about doing this (tech aide)! But it is nearly impossible to get a job on an any ob/gyn floor! i thought it was a great idea! so ive heard that someone nearly has to die before they get a position on these floors cuz its like heaven compared to med/surg etc for a tech. haha. duno if thats true. but discouraging to find a job there! thanks for the advice though!

Well I started out w/the same dreams and also fears I would never "get in" yet I was hired into L/D right out of school---so it can and does happen.

I advise you to get into and through school with the best grades possible, make networking contacts who may help you get into OB after graduation, and see what happens.

You MAY Decide in school during your clinical rotations, you change your mind about where you want to work----you never know. You have 3 or more years of school to work through and decide what you want. I do know I liked CCU/ICU a lot and would have wound up there, likely, if not in OB. I also loved gerontology. You get a nice taste of lots of different areas when in school. Keep your mind open----and work hard for that goal of graduating and becoming an RN. THEN decide what is next.

Good luck and I hope you get to achieve your dreams.
