When there I down time and the only activity is gossip, what do you do?

I am not a nurse yet, but I work in a geriatric facility. It's very easy to get wrapped up in gossip. Stay polite, don't feed into it, and find another activity while you have the time. You deserve it, right?

I agree with goddess9...gossip breads trouble. I usually just smile, nod, and walk away. Maybe spend some time with a resident that can't sleep or could use the company.
Good idea.
Thanks goddess. Why is it that those who don't 't gossip are perceived as snobs?
Usually what I find is that those people either don't really how nasty they are being, or they do know and they want to justify what they're doing. Don't let them bring you down to their level. Like RN said, maybe take the time to care for a patient who you might not have had the time for earlier in your day. ☺
That's a good policy goddess, I think there is a psalm that warns against gossip and a undisciplined tongue, it might even suggest cutting it off.

Every time I think about gossiping I have to stop and think about what the other nurses are saying behind my back. Then I feel a little less gossipy.

I've never yet had this downtime you speak of, but I imagine if the opportunity presented itself, I'd suddenly have an urgent need to go to the bathroom, or straighten up the supply closet, or get back to a resident regarding a question they asked earlier...

I tend to just comment that I've never been able to keep up with the details of others' business and - as mentioned above - find other things to occupy me. Its been awhile since I've worked in a geriatric facility, but those patients can tell some pretty entertaining tales, true or not!

Downtime???? How about spending some downtime with a resident who has no other visitors? Stop the gossip and do something worthwhile.
And you can bet they are gossiping behind your back,
