This is a required text prior to entering our actual nursing classes for an accelerated program. I assume that we will be tested on the material shortly after the program begins. I ordered it on Amazon for about $23. Calculations of Drug Dosages, 7th ed. by Sheila J. Ogden. It starts with the very basics of math and leads into the more complicated mathematics of calculating dosages. Look for it, it is great! Good Luck!

Thank you. I think it's now 43$ but that's fine by me.

Has anyone taken the actual test? I haven't taken an "entrance exam" in such a long time. How long are these things, usually?

I don't know of any standardized drug calculation test, so I'm not sure what to expect. We are using Calculate with Confidence which seems pretty useful for preparation. I haven't tried the CD it comes with, but I'm guessing it would be pretty helpful.

I took a dosage calc class it was a short term class and we used the above book it was very very easy, and the book takes you through step by step. Our teacher was pretty much useless so we just self taught ourselves. Its all basic math and converstions, find out the main way to do the conversions and your in.

my guess is you're looking at the st. louis community colleges...that's where i go....depending on how soon you have to take the test (it's only good for one year prior to admission), they offer a dosage calculations class that will get you 150% ready for the test...it's called nrsg 704 405 - nursing math, and is offered on just about every campus...call the continuing ed office or look here: http://www.stlcc.edu/conted/. looks like they have plenty of openings for classes that start at the end of this month clear through to april. they're one night a week for 4 weeks.

the admittance test is pretty basic nursing math equations and not a big deal....the book they use in that class, and which will serve you well once you get in to the program, should be in the bookstore on campus, but is also available online ( http://www.amazon.com/calculate-confidence-fourth-deborah-morris/dp/0323029280/sr=8-1/qid=1170487057/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3475169-5197465?ie=utf8&s=books ). it's really very helpful and everyone in my class last semester agreed that it was one of the best text investments we had made. you will reference it all through school!

What school are you at in Hawaii?? I know the HPU dosage calc class is pretty good (I went there) and prepared me well for the future dosage test I had to take to graduate.

I am taking the same test for SLCC. I signed up for the Nursing Math class mentioned above. I am taking the online version. I'll be applying for the program after I take BIO and CHEM this summer. I'll probably take the dosage test in the Fall so that I don't take it too early.

See, I'm confused. I was told that I was to take the test prior to applying? So let's say I apply in May .. a year to a year and a half waiting list... Does that mean I have to take it over if I don't get in that year mark? Or should I reconfirm that I have to do it before my application is even reviewed. Do I just need it before I start nursing school? In which case I could take it at anytime during my year while waiting.

Hi again....

Originally when they started this requirement, we were told the test was good for ONE YEAR...in fact, I had taken it in December '05....was admitted to Forest Park the next fall so was within the year, but I had to defer to the spring due to other obligations....even though it was only ONE MONTH past the one year, I was told I had to retake it....I was unable to start there in the spring as it turned out, but was accepted at Meramec...so that spring I retook it ('06) and then started last fall....

However, I asked an instructor on our campus a few weeks ago if they still required the test within a year and she told me no...it was good as long as you were on the list...so I would guess you have to get on the list, then take it....I noticed on the nursing school information online, it still reads that the test must be passed within one year of admission....

To be absolutely sure, I would call and talk to one of the nursing admissions counselors or call the nursing office to ask someone....I'd be happy to double-check, but I think it'd be best if you got an official word from someone who does admissions....they'll be the ones who will officially "admit" you.....you might also call and try to talk to the head of the program @ Meramec....here's a link to the document with phone numbers....go down to page 14 (Meramec):

Do take the dosage class, however, if you have qualms about your math skills....try to schedule it as close to the time you'll be taking the test, which is pretty much given all the time....
