Don’t know what to expect

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi everyone. I guess I’m just venting. It’s been almost 4 years now since I self reported and gave a statement to the BON here in Mississippi. I went to rehab, and have stayed in AA and celebrate recovery. I never heard back so I started working as a RN again and have renewed my license twice! I’m grateful I’m working but it’s like a cloud over me since there’s no closure yet. The AG’s office tried once about 6 weeks who to contact me - he left a voice mail. My lawyer called him back and no response. No certified letter or anything. I have a criminal lawyer since the DEA tried to arrest me 3 years ago. All of the DEA stuff is past the statue of limitations now says my lawyer and I’m grateful for that. It’s like I have this bomb that’s gonna explode in front of me any day now.

Anyone had anything similar?

I am not familiar with the BON in MS, but, I would consult an attorney who specializes in license defense (if the one you have currently is not), just to be safe.

It may be that the BON in your state is very far behind, or things have cooled down. I hope the latter for you.

I am sure it must be frustrating, just waiting to see if and when the other shoes drops. Meanwhile, keep working, stay sober and start banking some of that cash you may need down the line, if you are subjected to a monitoring contract.

I wish you the best!

You stated that you self-reported 4 years ago, and a whole year later the DEA "tried" to arrest you? I don't know why they weren't able to arrest you, but your self reporting (although commendable) is only sufficient where licensing is concerned, and doesn't take care of the criminal aspect of things. You did mention that you have a criminal lawyer, so hopefully he's taken care of that aspect of it, and you've been cleared. If not, you may have to get him to be a little more forceful / creative in contacting the relevant parties (for example the AG's office).

Considering that you were able to renew your license twice, I'm assuming there's no notations on your license by your state board. If it were me, I'd be grateful (as you are, I'm sure) that I still have my license, but I think for me personally, I'd probably try to do a little more to clear things legally so that I don't have to always be looking over my shoulder / living in fear of what could happen. I'm referring to the legal / criminal aspect of things, not the nursing side.

I wish you all the best, and I think I'd also get a lawyer who understands how important it is for everything to truly be cleared, and not just hope no one comes after me. Your lawyer sounds a little more reactive rather than proactive, but I realize you may have given us a condensed version of things, and he / she may really have done more.
