Does the 1-3yr CC experience have to be full time?

On the application will they have you specify? I want to have apply per diem at Columbia or Cornell uni Hospital. The travel would be like an hour and a half so you see why I'm shooting for per diem. I was thinking the remowness of these hospitals would boost my application. What is your opiniin?

Wtbcrna I think you misunderstood my question. I just wanted to know as far as history which would be more appealing. I do plan to get a icu job and hone skills there. The experience I am getting now is said and done and will be included in my job history so just looking in that sense. For example I'm just wanting to know if I should if I can switch to something if private care is less appealing than another job I can br doing before I even get to my icu experience. Thanks

I should have explained better. IMO I don't think either will help land ICU job or look better on your application. I would take the one that worked best with your school schedule for now.

No, I think you did fine. I think you are also right about if one is better. Actually any job works with my school schedule bc I'm doing it online through excelsior. Well actually now that I think about it my current job is better because I can study the entire time at work and at home. Also thanks for posting that article from the anesthesiology site, I signed up for the news letter. Thank you for your responses!

I read lots of abstracts and articles from all sorts of places, but be careful of anesthesiology online it is very biased towards anesthesiologists and the belief that CRNAs should be supervised.

Oh wow! Okay thanks so much

From the one year I sat on the admissions board I can tell you that the board could care less about the hospitals name or the schools name. They cared about the kind of PTs you cared for and also that you had your BSN.

Hey I just wanted to add that I drove 90 miles one way- roughly an hour and a half for a year. It made me hate working because I was so exhausted, but it was so rewarding patient care wise since I worked with some amazing docs, nurses, and learned a ton. I'm now prn and very thankful since I only work when I want too. My point is, one year of traveling like this is very difficult but well worth it. I applied to three schools and have gotten in at 2 already. Just remember it is well worth it in the end and always remember no matter what role you have, the patients come first!

Someone pleasee answer this also what is considered full time? Sorry if it sounds stupid. What is the minimum amount of hours or days a week for full time with the shifts being 12 hours? I would like to be able to stay at my current job which is a private case and I don't want to feel like I'm abandoning my patient. Also, I work 7 overnights a week holidays and everything. For almost 2 years now with no vacations. it would be good to find another job full time. Maybe I can use the excuse of needing/wanting benefits. I get excellent pay 32/hr as an Lpn but no benefits and I take out my own taxes (I mean I really should start soon haha)

Ultraposh,

I just wanted to ask - do you have connections or already work at NYP? I ask this because the field of nursing is not like it was 10 years ago when you just picked a hospital and started working. The NYC area is EXTREMELY oversaturated with nurses, to the point that a recent newspaper article mentioned the RN unemployment rate was above 30%. NYP gets literally thousands of applications for a single spot, ESPECIALLY for things like ICU. If you have no connection and have never worked there the chances are nil that you would get to go straight into the ICU at one of the nation's top hospitals in the most oversatured market in the US.

No no connections =____= guess I should just forget about it!

You should try and apply - but I definitely don't think you should expect to even hear back from them, ever. Make back up plans...

Lol that was my back up. Well I was hoping to get perdiem. They are hiring per diem positions. It was just wishful thinking. I'm not great in science so I want to find ways to boost my app

36 hours a week is usually considered full time.

36 x 50 = 1800

So if you need 1800 hours to sit for the CCRN, that would equal the standard full time year for a nurse working three 12 hour shifts a week. Given he/she only took the standard two weeks of vacation.
