anyone here feel like half their time is spent trying to get the doctors to their own jobs????????????:angryfire

Oh yeah!

Dont tell me that! I was running around trying to look after 14 patients by myself yesterday (no HCAs, noone at this time) and this doctor needed my help, so I said give me 5 minutes as I was busy. I asked him if he had everything we needed for this procedure whilst he twiddled his fingers sitting at the desk adn he said yes. I get to him 5 mins later put on a plastic apron, and he said "I need one" so I pointed in the direction to where they were! Apparently he gave me a dirty look. I then get to the patient and ask him where all the rubbish bags and inco sheets are, to which he replied "I need those". Well I lost it (I never lose it!) I flew my arms in the air and shouted "I just asked if you had everything, and you said yes, I do not have time to be running around after you!" I was fuming!!! Then he wanted me to explain the procedure which he was doing, to which I refused and said "your the one doing the procedure I dont know what your doing, you explain" then he expected me to dispose the rubbish, I again pointed in the direction of the sluice! I think he thought I was his private slave, I AM NO SLAVE! stupid doctor! They drive me up the wall!!!!

Ok I am calm again now I have that off my chest lol!!!!!

Hannah it sounds like you have had a really bad week. I do try to remember that at this time of year all of the doctors have changed, you house officers are brand new out of med school and are trying to come to terms with the changes in their responsibility the SHO may well be on his first senior job and feeling a little insecure. I don't know what level doc your experience was with and I would not try to justify bad manners or poor practice but there may be an explanation for his behaviour.

Firstly I work as part of a surgical team, consisting of a consultant, SPr, me SHO and HO I wonder if your doctor knew where to find the aprons and inco sheets, also he may not have considered using an inco he probably has never had to change a soiled sheet so may not have even thought of it.

If my patient was undergoing a procedure on the ward I would have no problme in explaining the procedure to them, in fact I think that sometimes nurses can explain better in a way that the patient understands and feels reassured by.

I always worry that as healthcare profesionals we are very quick to critisie other professions without trying to understand the pressures that other jobs entail, and this is not exclusive to nursing, I hear docs critisise nurses, nurses critisise physios, physios critisise doctors etc etc.

and it concerns me that there is little tolerance left in the NHS when we are all trying to achieve the same thing - best care for the patient

lol:rotfl: I know just how you feel I have been in like wise situations soooooooo many times. I think that the NHS should provide every ward with a padded & sound proof room for staff to go into for a good screem & shout with a bit of head banging against the wall for good measure, when we get that feeling of I want to cause bodily harm to someone right now:selfbonk: :banghead: . We could just let off steam in the room & come back calm & composed :saint: :lol_hitti

Yeah I know what you mean! I am SICK and tired of doctors, patients and relatives treating me like a piece of dirt, I did not go to school for 3 years to get the treatment I receive. I am a lovely and caring nurse and I rarely feel appreciated, drives me nuts! The amount of time myself and nurses I work with go home crying. So many times have I wanted to quit! Its just not fair!

Thats the thing, its something I never do, I never shout I am so shy and quiet, but I had 14 patients all needing my attention and the fact that there were no HCA's to help me answer buzzers, I had people on the phone wanting me, patients wanting me, doctors wanting me, other nurses, you name it wanting my attention that my stress levels boiled so high that I exploded!

Even as a patient I have been shouted at, only last week a doctor told me I was lucky I was in the Us being treated because I'd not get good treatment in the Uk. My dh said 'oh have you worked in the UK then? to which he replied no but he knew Docs from the Uk":confused:

It took a lot to get me to that point. It's the one and only time I've ever yelled at someone in public. Ignore the idiot doc. You're sure to meet many more of them. I can't tell you how many experts about the Canadian medical system I've met who have never even been to Canada:trout: They make me wanna :barf01:
