Do you have to be a LPN before you can be a RN

I am planning on going to school to become a RN. Someone told me that you had to be a LPN for a year to become a RN. I thought as long as you went to school and take your test you are a RN. who's right?

It is unnecessary to be an LPN before becoming an RN. You can pursue your RN licensure without ever becoming an LPN. Most people take the 'direct' path to becoming an RN.

However check thoroughly into both options as at our school, the LPN's get more than double the clinical time and hands on than we (ADN's) do, it's done to ensure we can't challenge the LPN boards untill it's too late, there are days I wish I had gone LPN then bridged just for that reason

Was this person referring to bridging from LPN to RN perhaps? My school requires LPN graduates to work as an LPN for a year before they can do the bridge program. You can also go directly into the RN program without having any training other than your CNA 1. That's the route I took.

do you have to be a lpn before you can be a rn? no. whoever told you that is wrong, wrong, wrong. you should be very careful of the people you listen to, especially people who are not rns in the first place. you should do your own research and research good information like this:
