Do you know your 'stuff'?!!!

Wow !! That is so cool ! I'm still doing pre req's so I have no idea.... But that is really awesome that you learned so much in 2 months! I can't wait to start NS. I am so excited and posts like yours make things even more exciting.

Awesome! I am still in nursing school myself but I can tell you that it is even more thrilling when what you are learning starts to "meld" together and you can see that you are thinking critically. That is really exciting and builds confidence to boot. Good luck with your program! :wink2:

Lol watch Discovery health, shows like Trauma Life in the ER and Code Blue....you look at 'em in a different way once you get more into school. I like learning new stuff. Some people in my class just memorize for the test and forget it the next day...don't be like that. It eventually bites them later. 1. you can't just memorize for an application type question, 2. you build on it later and actually use it in clinical. I'm coming up on my last semester, you really build on the previous semester...so don't just blow off med/surg when you go into OB and Peds and stuff...you'll see ALL the med/surg again, trust me

i can't believe i never thought about those shows!! those shows might make me a junkie!!! lol! good luck on your last semester!!!

Another thing I do that probably drives my husband and friends nuts, is I throw in words that I've learned into regular conversation. For example my son fell of his bike and I had to put a band aid on his patella!!! The only reason I really do this is to keep the words fresh in my mind. By using the words I won't forget them or their meaning!!!

I am the same way. My bf and I were watching House the other night, and I was like, "Wow! I know exactly what they're talking about these days!" I love it! But I'm sure as time goes on and we learn more we will start to get irritated at the things they get wrong (I've heard some nurses on this forum say as much).

I don't have cable or satellite at my home, but my father has it at his house. I stayed up until 2 AM the last time I was over there watching medical shows! I could not stop watching because it made me think of things I had learned. I would be a total junkie if I had those shows to watch at home.

isn't it amazing how much we learn so quickly!!! I'm been at uni for one semster (semester 2 starts tomorrow) and am amazed how much I've taken in. I work at a doctors surgery and when I read or hear something it now makes sence or I know what they are talking about - Its great!!

I don't start until Fall, but I took it upon myself to get the dosage calculation book and begin the work (I'm a little rusty in math lol). I've taught myself how to do/memorize most of the conversions and now I try to convert between units on things I buy at the store lol.

oh my gosh!!! i am so rusty in math too!! we were watching a mosby's video in class yesterday on medications and i almost had a panic attack at the calculations. i swear i experienced diaphoresis (lol!!) at the thought of having to figure those calculations out. i am only in a psw program right now (nursing school starts in sept.) and those calculations aren't in my scope so i don't have to worry about it right now....but i will soon!!! maybe i'll look into a dosage calculation book as well...what a great idea...thanks!!

ps...see how i slipped in that medical jargon?!!! very subtle, wasn't it......

Well if you're interested, another poster recommended Math for Nurses by Mary Jo Boyer. I bought it used on biblio.com for like $7.00. It's great for brushing up on your calculations and even goes into dosage conversions in the form of word problems.
