Discouraged

Hi.

I had the misfortune of taking The State Boards Exam several months after completing a BSN program. I did pass and am currently licensed, but because of my tardiness, I have had an extremely difficult time finding employment as an RN(being a new nurse is not helping my case either). Is there anything I can do that will make my status more appealing to employeers?(due to the circumstances)

I have a great passion for the nursing profession and feel that my gift is being wasted.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

No doubt your talents are being wasted. Unfortunately, timing is everything and right now is just not a good time for nurses. Especially new nurses.

When I say timing is everything, I don't mean your timing in taking your Boards. New grads who promptly took their exams, passed and became licensed are also without jobs right now.

I think the only think that will work for you or anyone in your position is just plain perserverance. Apply, apply, apply and then apply some more. Network with anyone you can. Try not to feel that you are being singled out as unemployable - there are many, many others in your shoes.

Go and speak with Unit Managers directly, I don't know of a single nurse at my hospital that was hired solely through human resources, HR rarely even calls applicants back to let them know they won't be hired.

I've been on numerous interviews and most of the managers seem to focus on the large gap that I have between my graduation, taking boards, and now. I've been searching for almost a year and always get the same outcome.

WOW,

Are you sure they aren't using that as an excuse? If you passed the Boards and are currently licensed, I don't understand the issue.

DO you even have to tell them when you took the boards?

A license is a license is a license...

Also, MANY new grads are having trouble finding jobs right now as are experienced nurses...market is tight.

How long was it between school and the boards? I can't comprehend it being an issue if it was only a few months.

I graduated in October of 1993 but couldn't take the boards until March of 1994...back then they were only offered at certain times of the year, not computerized...it wasn't a problem then.

Perserverance will pay off! It's just a terrible market for everyone all around right now.

Hey the market is just horrible rightnow, ur not the only one who applies and doesnt get hired...i have gotten my license and started working as an RN now that I want to change unit (snf) to acute, no one wants me.. But We need to try harder and persevere!
