Are you attending this school? Im scared to get into this program because I spoke to a nursing recruiter and she said they are reluctant to hire from the school because "they dont know what type of product they will produce"....

What is an average starting pay for this area?

Thanks!

No, I don't go there neither do I plan on it. As for Lpn schools, well from what I know atlest if you plan on working somewhere like LTC it really doesn't matter what school you wnet to. Now a hospital may be different, but I am not sure. For me I plan on working in LTC for a year, in acute and skilled. Hopefully that will get me prepared for a hospital. So if you go that route you will have already proven yourself. Pay for areas like Slidell, Baton Rouge, and Covington, I think are usually higher thatn New Orleans depending on your field. But it all ranges from 12-20 in LTC, and hospitals , and 19-35 in agency. That is for new grads atleast.

Yes, from what I have been told by nursing recruiters, hospitals care where you went to school. I had a meeting with Delta today, and they said they couldnt promise that thier program would be honored at another school if I wanted to do LPN-Rn....

Im not going there either!!!

(plus tuition is $13,000!)

be real careful about programs like this..i know a school opened in alexandria [computer school not nursing] and the sudents sighned a bunch of papers assigning loans to the school and when the school closed the students had to pay for the loans...very little was taught..and it put some of them where they couldn't borrow money to go to LSU

That may be true, but that is why we have a BON. Since they have to apply and their program has to be approved by the BON, they are at least meeting their minimal standards.

someone i know who graduated from delta in covington less than a year ago works at Gulf tates LTAC in Cov. and makes $45/hr. I think Delta graduates must turn out at least ok!

Oh wow, $45 an hour!? How can an lpn make that kind of money? Since I first posted this message, I started the rn program at Charity (only to realize nursing isnt for me!) Anyways, RN starts at $21/hr in Cov.

LPN makes 45$ an hour. it's hard to believe. then again, it's can be. travel lpn?

no. Gulf States is an long term acute care facility. she does work at night. graduated IV certified and has a couple of other certifications, but has only been out a year. don't know if i should expect it to last-just an acquaintance

ps-i heard she works for an agency. i need to get in on that deal asap! :)

Delta College in Covington has a 98% pass rate on their boards, are approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, and is a top quality school. Students do their clinicals at St. Tammany & Lakeview Hospitals - call them to find out what kind of nurses they are producing. Most universities will not accept direct credit from any "vocational" school; however, what they will accept is a nursing license. You can USUALLY get points or advanced standing on the list because you are already a working nurse. There is usually an exemption for a "block" of classes in the RN programs with an LPN license. As with any school, GPA is a major consideration. A quality LPN program is just another way to get into the highly competitive RN programs with advanced standing. If your ultimate goal is to become an RN, it will benefit you in this way only if you complete the entire LPN program and get licensed. There are also multiple Bridge programs you can take on campus and online to get your RN with an LPN license and good GPA.

In addition, Delta College informs you of all costs UP FRONT! They won't even accept your Registration Fee/Deposit until you've gone through financial aid and are comfortable with the package. The posters are correct in telling you to be careful because there are many schools that will rob you blind and leave you in a lurch. Do your homework!

In Covington, night classes start September 11th and the next day class starts Jan 2007. The Slidell school is trying to start in March 2007 and have no current dates for a night program (probably looking at 1 year from now).

Good luck with your decision and your nursing career! You can't go wrong with any choice if you work hard and put in your time.
