Decisions???

Published

Hi! I am a RN with 2yrs tele/med Surg, and a couple months of home health experience. I happily made it out the hospital and tried HH. I loved it but the company had unrealistic working requirements FOR ME, 12/14 pts a day, working M-F 8-5, on call every other weekend, meaning 12 days on, 2 off- too much for me. I have had interest for sometime to be a field hospice nurse. I actually got that job and start tomorrow. Before hearing that I got hospice position, I saw a position at my son's school for school nurse, only requiring 2yrs nursing experience. I applied and now have an interview for that position as well. I am trying to weigh the benefits of both. The school nurse schedule seems to be the biggest plus and I feel confident I could quickly learn the other objectives required for school nurse. I feel I will have a real shot with the snurse position being I know people at the school and I interview well. I am very torn! Any thoughts would be appreciated?!?!

What do you want to do? How old is your child? Will you be in the same school with the same hours? Is there a pay difference? Would that be offset by paying less for childcare?

If you can afford it, I'd go for the school nurse position. I say that

because school nurse generally does not pay very well at all.

Keep in mind that in home hospice can be every bit as busy/

hectic as regular home health too.

Since you already have the hospice position, go ahead and

start tomorrow, but still do the school nurse interview if you

can.

HH and hospice would be very similar work schedules. Versus steadier hours as a school nurse. You'll have to make a speadsheet on the benefits versus the burdens of each option for you and your family. Congrats on the new job or congrats of the upcoming interview.

Coming from a school nurse - take that one if you're offered & can afford it! I love my job. It's true that pay isn't the greatest (but it varies widely by area) but the other benefits outweigh that for me. My kids are young and I work in the district they attend so it's a huge bonus being on their schedule. School nurse jobs are usually few & far between. If you think you'd enjoy it go for it!

Could you do hospice PRN and on breaks?
