Deaconess

I have a couple questions for you guys. I have went through most of the threads and have a few concerns.

Did anyone ever have trouble with local hospitals allowing clinicals?

Does this college qualify you for Student Loans/Grants?

What is the typical cost?

Thanks!

Actually, the preceptorships on my floor only involve SN's who have completed all or nearly all of their clinicals, so there is a difference. That is in a St. Louis hospital.

As far as Forest Park Hospital, it's not that I had a problem going there, although it would not have been my first choice (remember, I'm an area native). It had to do with what we were told about how clinicals worked and the reality of what we were told. Also, we didn't have a peds site. There isn't a pediatric unit at Forest Park. Did you see what I wrote about what the pediatric clinical was?? Unbelievable.

I have to be careful about what I say here, but know that those considering this program should do so with great caution. 2003-2004 Board pass rate for that program - 60%, and 3 people took it. I have no doubts as to why that is.

I really am regretful that the program wasn't what I had hoped. I'm not new to education. I gathered information from all of the nursing schools in the area, interviewed admissions representatives, thought I had done my homework. What a blow. And I am not alone. There are a number of us.

But regardless, best of luck to you. I am glad it is working for you.

Hi,

I have to admit that after I read your post I got a little nervous because I'm investing in this program as well so I called the MO Division of Professional Registration and they told me that Initial Approval means that the program has not graduated a class yet and they said that for some Schools it takes four years such as in case of new BSN's and that after they graduate their first class the school receives Full Approval; DCN has Full Aproval for their Campus Programs but since the online portions are so new it's still in initial. Also I asked about the Pass rate and they said that the online LPN pass rate is 100% and that the ASN is 66.67% out of three students and I think that means two passed and 1 failled in the first try. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I wish all the best and success in your professional progression.

LTNurse,

Thanks for doing your homework on this one...I truly appreciate it.

For those considering Deaconess...do your research, read the posts on this website, and consider the local clinical support and financial assistance you will need to be successful. If you are convinced that Deaconess can help you than go for it. If you are turned off and doubtful about what Deaconess has to offer...than look else where. There are plenty of other students who will gladly fill your seat and benefit from Deaconess's online ASN program.

The doubtful can rant on...but I and many others will succeed in the goal we have set out to meet. I will graduate with an ASN from Deaconess with the blessing of the Missouri State Board of Nursing and the National League of Nursing and that it good enough for me. I will have the opportunity to practice nursing in any of the 50 states I choose to apply to and I will gladly pay my student loans with thanks in my heart that I found the Deaconess program.

Ditto, Cheri - I will graduate next semester from Deaconess with my ASN. I have had no problems with the school in any way. I feel that I've gotten a great education and I know I'll be well prepared to take the NCLEX. I'll probably continue on after that and get my BSN from Deaconess. You get out of it what you put into it.

Thank you Cheri!! When is your validation? Mine's April 21-24.

Hi Everyone! I have some questions also about Deaconess. Unfortunately, I live in the EC dreaded Calfornia, where all traditonal nursing schools are impacted and only taking their LPN students in the RN programs. Since EC is not a choice for me right now, is Deaconess? Does anyone know if I can get licensed in CA if I graduate from Deaconess? Is there a Deaconess website? I apologize for all of the questions, but I don't know where else to ask them. Thanks in advance for your help! :p

I go to St Louis April 28 - May 1. I was hoping to run into some of my fellow ALLNURSES/Deaconess classmates.

How about you MonaB and LTNurse?

Nursygirls,

You really need to call the CA BON to be sure...From what I have been told, a Deaconess student licensed in another state can receive reciprocity in CA. But I also saw a post on this board a while back from a CA student who said CA would not allow the precepted clinicals needed for the Deaconess program because of state guidelines. Now where that information came from and how accurate it is, I do not know.

The best way to find out is to call the BON. Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

Hi Cheri,

I'll also be going to St. Louis from April 28 - May 1 but I'll get there on the 27th since the day usually starts really, really early on the first day of Clinical validations.

I am also planning to come as early as the 26th or 27th...for the same reason, I want to get settled in and prepared before heading to the first day.

Hi Cheri,

I am scheduled for validations from April 21st to 23rd. It looks like we will all be there at different times. I will probably arrive on the 20th to get settled in.

Bummer we won't get to meet. Maybe at some point in the program we will :)

Thanks so much! Hopefully, I will find something out that is concrete. I hear alot in speculation, innuendo and rumor. Too bad someone can't just come out and say "This is acceptable and this isn't." But, then that would be just way to easy!!! I will keep you posted as to what the CA BRN says when I call them tomorrow. Time is wasting away and I feel like I am spinning my wheels in this d**n state!!
