Curry, Scores and any other help :)

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hi there,

So I have some questions that hopefully someone out there can shed some honest light on ~ I am currently in the process of gathering all of the necessary paper work etc. in preparation for applying to accelerated BSN programs - specifically at Curry College (MA) and UMass Amherst. I would be an international student and with it being my 'second' career, am not fresh out of school. Not being familiar with the US system, please can someone give me some honest answers:

I took GREs as required as I don't have all of the pre-reqs (am hoping to complete those in the fall) and scored 550 and 550 verbals and quant. ~ is this really terrible?? Am planning on retaking them next month.

How much would 'life experience' count ? I have been teaching for 8 years - is this going to work in my favour at all?

A few programs I have looked at have been fairly vague in terms of what they want for GRE scores ~ my GPA for my first degree is around 3.0 - am I being COMPLETELY unrealistic in applying for the accel. programs?

Does anyone have an experience with Curry, MA??

Finally - is one more 'employable' with a BSN (even if it is accelerated) than an Associates Degree? What are the major differences when looking for a job?

Many thanks for any help - much appreciated :)

Hey there, A good friend of mine applied to the Curry College Accelerated program and took GREs and got a good score (not sure the #'s) but because the program is SOO competitive people with their prereqs done got higher consideration.

This friend is in another program with me now.

Hey - thanks MANurse Hopeful - what program? Is it worth doing an Associate's Degree first and then going on to ABSN??? Decisions, decisions - anyone know?

She was looking into the accelerated BSN because she already has a Bachlors. We're both in the LPN program now-f/t 10 months (because we had no prereqs done and 1.5 yr waiting lists) and this fall we start the LPN-RN bridge program (p/t - 1yr) so we're still done w/ ADN in 2 years then we're going to Curry for BSN

It sounds like the hard way around but for no prereqs done it was the quickest to RN

Hi,

I am presently a student at Curry. I am in the second cohort of the accel BSN. I am not sure what score they are looking for with the GRE's, but I do know they want at least a 3.0 from your first degree. They also look at your work experience, letter of intent, and recommendations. The program is really rigorous. The clinical rounds are at top hospitals. The program has a great reputation with the major hospitals in Boston, so that helps when finding employment. Good Luck!!!

Hello all, just wanted to see if there was anybody out there who applied to Curry for jan 07 accel...want to meet my competition :-) and hopefully future fellow students!

how competitive is it?? i am really nervous. I havent taken micro yet, hopefully that wont prevent me from getting accepted. maybe we should post as acceptances/regrets roll in so we all know when we should hear!

anyways, cheers and good luck

UMass Amherst has been in the news, they are scaling back the amount of resources in their nursing program. My daughter is a senior there now and many of her friends had to choose other majors after being accepted into the nursing program. They are going to community collleges now to get their RN. Curry has a good reputation and a lovely campus.

As a future Curry ACCEL student (and a mother trying to balance it all) could you give me an idea of your schedule while you were a student? How are you doing in your job search? Any feedback and/or advice about the program would be greatly appreciated!

i graduated from curry's accel program. it was a challenging program and i am glad it is over. the clinicals are excellent and the theory courses left me feeling prepared. i passed the nclex with 75 questions and now i am working at a boston hospital. the classes are two days a week the first semester, 3 days of clinical and one day of class summer semester, and one day of class with one day of clinical the last two semesters. all of the class and clinical days are full (long) days. there is a lot of outside reading and work, so they recommend that you don't work during the program. i worked my last semester, but i don't recommend it. hang in there and you will do great!

wow, thanks for all the info and the encouraging words--very helpful! can you stand a few more questions? did you know what kind of nursing you wanted to do before you started the program? what kind of floor are you on and why did you choose it?

thanks!

i don't know specifics of what curry looks for in this program but i went to curry after going to another college for 1 yr for premed .i was on summer leave when i had a change of heart and decided i wanted to be a nurse i was working in a nursing home as an aide and had a great head nurse .curry was local and i interviewed with them that summer to get into their nursing program i was impressed .they helped me get all my paper work together ,transcripts and such .i had one prereq i had to have so i wouldn't have to start as a freshmen.thay were offering it that summer i took it .i had 1 other prereq.i should have taken as a freshmen nsg student ;A and P

thay made and exception and let me take it concurrently my sophomore yr there in sept.i graduated 3 yrs later with my BSN .i have never regretted my decision .its a tough program i felt well prepared for work after grad.my clinicals were at boston hospitals -all good experiences. i used some of my professors for references for my first job.(i applied to 5 boston hospitals and was excepted at all 5 ).thats because of my education from curry. it is also a lovely campus and for me was eay to get to .the school was a good size for me also i wouldn't have liked or done as well in a huge campus.PS this was almost 20 yrs ago.
