Current Nurse practitioners??

What was your experience as an RN before being accepted/admitted to school for your MSN? What area of speciality were you in, and did you have difficulties finding a job? I always knew I wanted to go back to school for my masters. However, I still had curiosities about what I could do with my BSN, and such as L&D. I love what I do now, but I still want to further my education. I don't regret learning labor and postpartum, because now I will never wonder what if. So here I am, back to my original plan of going back to school for family practice nurse practitioning! I want to make sure that specializing in such a unique specialty won't hinder me from getting a job in family nurse practitioning. I know I can be accepted in to my schools of choice, I am just looking for job security once I am done. I will have med-surg under my belt and some home care, but the majority will be in labor, delivery, and postpartum. Thank you very much in advance!!

Specializes in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

I'm in NNP school now. I've worked in a NICU for 3 years. Several nurses in the NICU and in the ER were I worked as an ER Tech have become FNPs and get jobs quickly.

Do you think it would limit me from getting a job because I am within a specialty? I just want to make sure I could get a job :)

No. Not in my area. The NICU nurses basically have 0 experience with people over 15 pounds and still get jobs.

That is reassuring. I am not sure if this is even a true problem or if I am just worrying myself over something that doesn't exist. What area are you in? I work in NH!

Specializes in Education, FP, LNC, Forensics, ED, OB.
