Hey guys, I'm new to allnurses.com and I have a question for anyone who was accepted to Cal State East Bay's nursing program. I have 3 pre-reqs. to finish (Philosophy, Stats & Micro) before I apply to the program. My current GPA is a 3.3 (not counting the last classes I need to finish). I doubt that I'll be able to get straight A's on my last classes, and even if I did my GPA would only be raised to a 3.5. Do you guys think I could make it into the program?

3.5 gpa is not high enough, however if you could do really well on the TEAS about 90-95 percentile, you may have a chance to get in, also try to do some volunteer works if that can increase your chance of getting accepted.
good luck!
thanks for replying! i knew it wasn't high enough, and i doubt i'll get in when i apply for fall 2009. i guess i'm just going to have to wait another year or so so that i can get some paid work/experience done because csueb only gives points for that. i'm studying for the teas right now...it's kind of overwhelming me, plus i start school in like 3 weeks! aaahhh!
Hi everyone, sorry if I sound annoying, it's just that I'm really confused as to what I should do. CSUEB is my top and only choice for the nursing school that I want to get into. Let's say that I don't get in for fall 2009...can I work on a minor (Health Science), take a few courses for nursing that aren't pre-reqs (like Nutrition), hopefully get some work experience and reapply for the next year? I just don't know how I should spend my time if I don't get in the first time I apply. I know I shouldn't doubt myself, but I know I should start planning for what I should do if I don't get in. I want to get a few suggestions first before I talk to the nursing department to get more info. Once again, sorry if I sound annoying, I'm just confused and worried.
I'm sorry to say this most Nursing programs in Ca are impacted, if you only apply to the CSUEB, the chance is low because you have only 1 shot, and you don't want to wait your time. So you should start a plan first. If you really want to be a nurse, my suggestion for you is try to apply as many Universities or colleges that have nursing programs around your area as possible, so that'll increase your chance of getting in. Some nursing programs are required Human Nutrition, Human Development as thier pre-reqs, so you can take that. At the CSUEB, they allow students to take Pharmacology and Pathophysiology courses, you can take these classes too because these classes are hard, so get them done will lighten your schedule while you're in the program. Go talk to the Nursing department if that can help you feel better.
Thanks for the suggestions! =)

I'm going to apply for 2010 at CSUEB because I still have some pre-req's to finish, but in the meantime I am also going to work on a health sciences BS, since the lower division requirements for health sciences and nursing are basically the same. Then, if I can't get into CSUEB's nursing program, I can still get a BS and try to get into a community college program, so I'll have an RN and a BS (which will allow me entrance into most master's programs). So basically, if you can't get into CSUEB, I would work on health science major (not minor) while you're waiting to find out, and then try for a 2-yr program or something if you can't get in. I was super confused and worried when I was first trying to figure out my 'what if' options, but it's really good to figure things out and have a backup plan, so if you don't get into the program you don't just give up.
thanks, jennafezz!
some people in my pre nursing class at csueb mentioned that they say that they are going to switch to the health sciences major and complete nursing that way. i had no idea how that would work until i read your post, lol. now i know what to ask the nursing/health science department.

hi
i was a student at cal state hayward when it had that name. n e way, chabot and ohlone have good programs.. let me advice u that they offer the ADN degree and csueb offers bsn. Difference is just the degree ...pay for starting is very very similar.. in some places, its the same for candidates that have either degree. i was exactly in ur shoes once..exactly... i was just as confused and im still waiting to get into a program... while i have been waiting to get in, i got married, had a child, took classes, worked and still am waiting. lol..programs are just so impacted everywhere. let me suggest that u should not take more than 12 units at csuh cuz u will not do well in ur classes. try ur best to get as many A's as u can cuz ur gpa is a key point that they look at.. then its community service, residency, work experiece... i used to work at eden medical center in castro valley.. and washington hospital... really good hospitals.. n e way good luck and i hope we get in...
thanks, RaNdHaWa'Z!
I know all the nursing programs are hard to get into! I wish it wasn't this impacted! But I really hope we do get in to the nursing programs, too. I can't believe that you are still waiting, lol. But I'll hope & pray for all of us to get in. Good luck to you too!

same here if i dont get in i am going to major in health science under health administration at cal state east bay. I really want to be nurse but if I dont get in after 2 yrs I am going to work on the administration side of the hospital because I have to face reality I have an autistic son i have to take care of and I cant wait around for the nursing program. I quit my job and moved back home to go to school full time last year its time for me to get back to work:yeah:never thought I'd here myself utter those words:smackingf
hey want2banurse35,
That seems to be the back-up plan for a lot of pre nursing students at csueb, lol. It's not a bad one, either. What exactly is health administration by the way? Like what kind of jobs could you get and what would you be doing?
Anyway, do what you feel you should do. I too don't want to wait that long to enter into a nursing program either. Do what's best for you and your family. Good luck in whatever you choose to do!
