****** off at CSCC

So!

I applied for both the traditional track nursing and online track nursing at CSCC. I have heard great things about their program and it was really my first choice out of all the schools I applied to (others being Mt Carmel and OSU). I was told to apply for traditional, that way in case you don't get into the online program you have a backup.

I got my acceptance for traditional track, to start in Fall of 2012. I have to accept or reject the offer by March 15th. Now, I already know that I won't find out about my status for the online application until April. I called the office and they said I have to decide now -- I can take my chances with trying to get into the online program, and reject the traditional offer. Or I could accept the traditional offer, but then my online track application would be null and void. And she confirmed that I won't find out about being accepted/rejected from the online track until late April.

This really seems wrong to me. When I pointed all this out, her response was "you can always reapply to the traditional track in August". Seriously? That's all you've got for me? Surely I'm not the only person applying to both programs here.

Long story short -- should I just wait until Fall 2012 (and go back into repaying loans as a result)? Try my chances with the online track? Check out other schools or try to see if I get in to Mt Carmel or OSU? Oy vey. Sorry for the rambling ranting.

FYI - you may find this not to be true in furture quaters depending on where you are for future clinicals. Lots of units in local hospitals do not have sufficient PCAs (or whatever they call them on that unit) for them to perform all those functions. On those floors the nurses do am care and the like and if you are there, you will be expected to function in that capacity as well. But, that's a good opportunity to do some in depth assessment.

Yes, I fully expect this. I was trying to convey the message that in clinical, especially first quarter in LTC, we are not viewed as being a PCA or STNA type role. We are viewed as nursing students from day one and practice filling the role of a nurse, which does include PSA/STNA duties. And you are also correct about the assessment. Giving a bath is the best way to fully assess the skin!

Well, it is official. I am an online nursing student at CSCC :). Anyone else around here going to be a 2nd quarter online student starting at the end of the month?

Also, there for 111 there is a Fri/Sat 7-2 clinical and then a blank time with no day or time. Does anyone know what that typically is? Weekend? Weekday? AM? PM?

Congrats. You guys really finished up early. How'd 110 and 100 go?

Awesome - congrats! Let me know how it is, since you'll be a 3rd quarter online student when I start my 1st quarter online =P

Also, good luck on finals this week everybody (from CSCC)!

Well we have finals on Tuesday. The committee met on Friday to make the decision about letting me switch tracks. I'm not worried about 110 - that class was super easy. I have a 90/95 in the class after two exams, the teaching learning paper, and the communication analysis. It is the 100 finals that worries me. I still can't figure that class out. I read the book, I do the Compass quizzes, I attend lecture, I take notes, I relisten to lectures... Oh well. As long as I get an 80% on the 100 final I will get a B in the class so at least I know I'll make it to second quarter!! :p

Well, congrats on switching tracks. You'll do fine in 100. The final wasn't bad. The 110 final on the other hand really threw a great deal of the class for a loop.

Uh oh - is the 110 final much harder than the two midterms? I found both midterms very easy with no studying (just attending seminar). At least in 110 they give us a breakdown of what is on the exam and how many questions we'll have on the topic so I know where to focus my studies.

I take it the 100 final is easier than the two midterms? That would be nice :).

Well, I passed. On to 2nd quarter!!

Bravo!!! I might be asking you for tips come Fall quarter ;)

(Also, I feel bad about the title of this post now, but it was just so frustrating applying to so many schools and not knowing my future!)

Ha - no worries. It is a very frustrating time. I said a few words myself back then too.

Feel free to ask away. I have learned a ton from students ahead of me and it has been invaluable.

Question to any current online students!!! I am only getting the break announcements about the traditional program since they are posted on the 100/110 blackboard sites. I am now in the online program and no one has passed anything on to me. I sent e-mails asking but they either go unanswered or I get a response saying faculty is on break and my question will be answered Monday.

I have clinical on Mondays. Obviously we don't go to the site on Monday, but do we meet Monday at all on campus? I have no idea if I should show up anywhere and if so, where! I won't have clinical the next week because of break. Blackboard is up but the course is empty.

Hi. I am starting the traditional track this fall and have a question about books. My sister in law passed down some of her nursing books and happens to have one that is required for this fall only it is the 5th edition instead of the 6th which is what was on the book list. Did anyone use a later edition and/or is that even allowed? It is the Fundamentals of nursing: Human health and function by Craven, R.F., & Hirnle, C.J. I would really like to use it and save some cash since I know I will already be spending a ton on books!
