So I just took a cancelation date for two weeks from now. And I have a question for anyone that can answer it. In the IM lab section where you have to mix the meds: Mixing insulin is a given and I get that whole ordeal. The IM meds that need to be mixed as listed in the study guide (tordol, ativan, compazine, benadryl and nubain), the SG says that they are compatible, but what drugs are drawn up first? Does it matter?

BigKenny, First of All....congrats on your CPNE date. It is almost over! If it is not specified on the order, I drew up my two solutions in order as they were ordered. I commented aloud as I did this and the CE just nodded so I can say it worked for me! Good Luck and remember to slow down, breath, double check your grid and work as you go!

Hey there,
I just took a cancellation date myself for Aug 3-5 and funny enough, I have this same question on my list of questions (I'm going to the EC workshop next week).
One thing I read somewhere else that made sense was the person drew up the Ativan (or controlled substance) 2nd so as not to contaminate the original vial with a controlled substance......
Any thoughts? I was going to post this ?? on the EPN site or get an answer at the workshop.

I asked this question of CPNE a while ago.
It does not matter which you draw up first. Some learned (originally) to draw up the narcotic first, but that is not required at the cpne.
hope this helps.
did you guys know, that as enrolled ec students, you can email any questions (no more than 10 at a time) to "[email protected]" (they usually answer w/i 24 hours max) and a 30 minute phone call to a nurse educator once a week. (you can talk to a nurse educator for 30 minutes per day for the whole week prior to your cpne)!!!
GOOD LUCK
(and check your pm box, too )
