Any suggestions for study materials for the CPHIMS exam?

Thanks!

Greetings joyncaring,

I know I've posted several somewhere on this Forum.....in the middle of changing planes now so use the Forum's search feature and the terms passed my CPHIMS or just "CPHIMS"

Thank you, RNinformatics!

Does anyone know of any CPHIMS or NI online study groups, forums, or discussion boards?

Any suggestions for study materials for the CPHIMS exam?

RNinformatics is right. If you key in “cphims” into the allnurses search box, you will find CPHIMS and/or NI study resources.

There isn’t one book that covers all the information for the CPHIMS. The HIMSS website has CPHIMS Review resources on their web site that may be helpful. They also have a 100-question Self Assessment Exam for practice.

The CPHIMS is divided into 3 areas (General, Systems, and Administration), which is further subdivided into General (Healthcare & Technology Environments), Systems (Analysis; Design; Selection, Implementation, Support, & Maintenance; Testing & Evaluation; Privacy & Security), and Administration (Leadership & Management).

ANCC has an Informatics Nursing Study group that starts 9/6/11, which is through telephone conference call.

You can find this information by going on the ANCC website, and going to the Informatics Nursing certification information section. Once you get to the Informatics Nursing section, on the left hand side, you will see "Seminars/Study Groups" and below that are the dates and times of the study groups. You can then click which one you want to attend.

Joyncaring, are you a member of HIMSS?

Your state HIMSS chapter may already have a CPHIMS study group. Check with your state chapter. You may be able to get one started, which will help you and others study for the exam.

I am looking for study resources that have practice questions (particularly scenario questions). I am familiar with many of the CPHIMS topics as I already have healthcare IT and nursing work experience and education. The last time that I took an exam (of this intensity) was the NCLEX (which was many, many years ago). From that experience, I remember how beneficial practice exams and review outlines were in helping me to study for the exam. I have come across numerous posts on allnurses regarding helpful NCLEX resources (i.e., practice questions, reviews, etc.). Therefore, I would like to know if anyone has come across practice questions related to HIMS topics (besides the references listed on the HIMSS web site and CPHIMS Review Guide).

I have the paperback CPHIMS Review Guide, which I have reviewed many times. In addition, I have obtained some of the resources that are listed after each chapter. These resources have helped me understand HIMS topics with more depth. Besides applying these topics on-the-job, I would like to apply them to practice questions to help me prepare for the exam.

Yes, I am a member of HIMSS. I have checked my state chapter for CPHIMS study groups, and if anyone would like to form one. I live in a rural area, which is far from where my state chapter meets. Because of this, I have to study on my own, and when my work/family schedule permits it. I considered forming an online study group, and will see if there are interested individuals.

I know that the paperback CPHIMS Review Guide, CD ROM, and the Self-Assessment Exam have practice questions (listed on the HIMSS web site). They cost quite a lot, especially for students.

The paperback CPHIMS Review Guide has about 47 questions in the back of the book. Most questions ask for you to recall memory, but the exam also contains many application and analysis questions. Many years ago, I found practice questions to help me a lot on the NCLEX. That’s why I’m looking for application and analysis type questions to practice for the CPHIMS exam.

After looking at the HIMSS web site, I agree with you that the CPHIMS Review Guide, CD ROM, and Self-Assessment Exam are very expensive. Do you think you can find the review guide used on Ebay or Amazon? Just a thought.

When I studied for the exam, I followed the tasks in the detailed content outline of the CPHIMS Candidate Handbook. For example, under Design (in the Systems area), the task is to "identify how a system design accommodates business processes" (CPHIMS Candidate Handbook, 2011). You and I could respond to this task with knowledge from our work experience and past education.

I started studying by responding to each task (from the content outline). When I responded to all the tasks, I reviewed the information repeatedly (especially since I practice these areas at work daily). I made up my own questions from the tasks. This helped me get into a test-taking mindset rather than just a study-review-recall mindset.

I understand your dilemma in trying to find practice questions for this exam. Unlike the NCLEX, there aren't numerous CPHIMS study resources out there. I had to form my own practice questions to get into the test-taking mode. I'll dig back into my study materials to see what else I used and post them.

Have you looked at the tasks for the exam content outline yet?

I considered forming an online study group, and will see if there are interested individuals.

Let us know how the online study group turns out. There may be others who are looking for an online CPHIMS study group to join. In previous posts, RNinformatics has mentioned joining professional associations and their list serves such as HIMSS and ANIA-CARING. You could let the list serves know that you would like to start an online study group. You may find interested individuals. I've seen study groups on Yahoo Groups. Just a thought.

Are you going to take ANCC's NI certification? Or have you taken it?

You might want to key into the allnurses search box, "ANCC NI certification." There are 5 threads that you might find more information, which are entitled "Studying for the NI Board Certification / CEUs," "Recommended Resource for Studying for the NI Certification," "Failed the ANCC NI Certification... Now What?", "ANCC certification study guide question," and "I passed my certification exam!!"

You mentioned that you already have some of the references from the CPHIMS Review Guide.

“Managing Health Care Information Systems: A Practical Approach for Health Care Executives” (2005) (by Wager, Lee, & Glaser) and “Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice” (by Latour) were very helpful.

“Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice” (by Latour) had ‘Real-World Cases’ and ‘Summary’ sections at the end of each chapter that helped with application and analysis. Each chapter had a “Check Your Understanding” section, which had questions for you to answer. You can check your answers with the questions at the back of the book. I studied from the 2nd edition since the newest edition had not been published.

“Managing Health Care Information Systems: A Practical Approach for Health Care Executives” (by Wager, Lee, & Glaser) had ‘Summary’ and ‘Learning Activities’ sections at the end of each chapter also. I used the 1st edition (2005) at the time.

Try the "Professional Review Guide for the RHIA and RHIT Examinations" by Patricia Schnering. Its the closest thing I found to practice questions for the exam. The book comes with a CD full of practice questions. You can find the book used on amazon or half, just make sure that the CD comes with the book and works.

The book is divided into sections of practice questions. I focused on the sections that related to the CPHIMS exam.

Are you board certified in nursing informatics or RHIA certified already?
