Conflict of interest?

I would speak with the administrators at your school. My LVN program had a policy that kept students from attending clinical at the hospital they worked at, and my RN program will not let us precept at our place of employment. Some schools have no choice because there is only one hospital they contract with for clinical, so there is an overlap.

I think they try to avoid in as much as possible due to favoritism, also they don't want the Rn's you work with to ask you to function outside your scope of practice.

I wouldn't think that it would be a problem. I work as an LPN on nights at our clinical hospital.

When I was a CNA going to LPN school we were not allowed to do clinicals on the unit where we worked, but could do clinicals at the hospital where we worked. Thankfully before med/surg clinicals, I transferred to the ER as a tech so I was able to do clinicals on the med/surg floor I had worked at for 3 yrs prior. It was nice to already know the staff and the set up of the unit, made clinicals at least a little less stressful!

Now that I'm in RN school I'm not quite sure how it works (I'm only in the 1st semester!)

I work at the hospital I do clinical at. Its never been a problem. I'm sure I couldn't precept on the unit I work on though. Now that I'm thinking about it, theres a nurses aide that works on the unit she does clinicals on and the clinical instructor knows about it. No I don't think it would be a conflict of intrest. However each school is differet.

At my School, I was not allowed to do any clinical rotation at the hospital I worked at. However, we had 5 hospitals to choose from for clinical. I suppose if it was just the hospital I worked at, I imagine things would be different. You do need to check with the program..

I currently work as an LPN at my local community hospital on Med/Surg. I am also in the second semester of RN school. We are allowed to do clinicals at the places where we work. It is not a conflict at all. If anything, we are able to assist some of the other students in finding their way around and helping them locate supplies, etc. No conflict at all.

My uni won't allow it, because it can really cause problems with boundaries. The duties we can perform as AINs (CNA-equivalents) are limited, while the duties we can perform as student RNs are quite a bit more diverse. It can also cause problems with some students being treated better than others by staff, because the staff know them already. I think it's better not to, but if it works for you and your college and hospital are happy about it, go for it.

At my school, you could do clinicals in the hospital where you worked, but not the same floor or unit. The students who were faced with this dilemma agreed - they didn't want to be an RN nursing student on the same floors where they worked as CNAs, PCTs, or LPNs. It's hard enough to work during school and not be able to do eveything at work that you can do during nursing clinicals - but for it all to be in the same place...nope.
