Clinical Headaches

I have a question for student LVNs. What type of reception do you receive once you arrive at your clinicals? For the past month we have been treated like crap. I guess the nurse have forgotten they were once students. Please let me know how you have handled this situation.

do not feel alone and be prepared to go through it again if you decide to go back and get your rn. i have now gone through it twice. the thing i really hate is the nurses who think they know it all and think you are dumb. just keep your head up knowing this too shal pass. good luck!

Speak to your instructor about it. Or speak to their supervisor.

When you have a bad situation, speak to your instructor. I'd avoid their supervisor, when you're a student complaints like that should be routed through your instructor IMO.

Also, you should just expect that some nurses do not enjoy having students around. There is never an excuse for rudeness etc.. but neither can you expect for all of them to be thrilled you're there. When I'm in that situation I keep my "please-educate-me" questions to a minimum (only what's pertinent to my patient for that day), communicate with them regularly so they're aware of what's up, work hard (spend as much of my time with my patient as possible) and stay out of their way. If I'm blessed with a "nice" nurse then I have a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot more, but this situation's never a guarantee and I adjust accordingly. I've never had a nurse be inappropriate to me before though, just cold... that I can deal with, anything over the line I would take to my instructor.

And most importantly I file all this information away in the back of my brain for later when I'm a nurse and have a student assigned to one of my patients, so I can remember exactly how I felt and then do what I can to help them have a better learning experience.

It seems to be quite common that there are some nurses who do not appreciate having to deal with the nursing students. I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to a bad day, a stressful time in their lives or bad experience with a particular nursing student. We have also come across some nurses who love having the nursing students around. I try to seek them out first if I really need help. Our nursing instructor said to expect both kinds of nurses wherever we go.

Unfortunately this statement is true however it is very unfortunate :o If I were you I would talk to your instructor b/c that is what you are paying them for and that's their job to handle those types of situations. It could also be that you could ask her if there is any particular thing that she likes/dislikes or if she has been offended by something. Lot's of times I think it is just so busy they come off this way with out realizing it either.

I had a nurse like that in 2nd semester who handled most of the peds at that particular clinical site. Everyone that had her previously had warned me that she hated students........Well, as soon as I got to the floor to find her I introduced myself and told her that I heard she was the best peds nurse on the floor and I felt fortunate that I was finally able to work with her......that immediately changed her tune and I didn't have a problem one from her and learned alot that week. Strokin the ol ego never hurts even if it is not truly how you feel. Some may call this "brown nosing" but, I figure you catch more flies with honey :rotfl: Do keep them informed. You never know, they may have been burned previously by a student nurse and that's where the attitude comes from. Or it could just be a bad day. I am by no means condoning her rudeness, just offering suggestions to help get you through those tough ones. Good Luck with it in the future.
