Chances of getting an interview?

Published

I'm currently an ICU nurse in the process of applying to CRNA school. We all know how competitive getting in is let alone even landing an interview. For people that have been accepted in the past, what do you think my chances of getting an interview will be? Here are my stats:

-Worked in a high acuity CVICU for 14 months taking care of various devices such as IABP, impella, LVAD's and ECMO's, currently taking COVID ICU travel contracts. Come July, ill have 2 years ICU experience.

-Undergrad GPA 3.37. Took statistics and organic chem online and received an A in both classes. Undergrad science grades: A&P I: A  A&P II: B-  Advanced A&P: B

-I have my CCRN and am currently studying to take my CSC.

-I've attended NTI twice, attended the online zoom for diversity CRNA.  In July, im going to the Summit Anesthesia CRNA conference and in September im going on a medical mission trip.

-I have a shadowing opportunity coming this April as well.

You can try. But your GPA isn’t very high. You could get away with it if you had more experience... but 2 years is the bare minimum.
sorry to rain on your parade, just an honest opinion. Try + keep trying.

Try to score a 155+ on verbal and 155+ on your math GRE. If needed. Shoot for 160 on both. That can help. You have to make the rest of your application outstanding. Your extra curricular is great.

Your GPA is adequate, and a solid GRE will help. GRE of 300 will get you in a lot of programs.

Hi Ace,

Which program will you be applying?

I would reach out to your program to ask for a transcript review. Based on what you shared your science GPA is approximately 3.5 ( depending if all these course were weighted the same)

you definitely have a chance at getting an interview! You are very involved which is a great way to be! ?

Best of luck! If you are looking for a supportive community I suggest you join

Hello! Im actually applying to a few different schools, but York College’s app is due in 2 weeks so thats the one ill be applying to first. Im applying to schools that don't require the gre this time around. If I don't have any luck, I plan on taking the gre’s sometime later! Also thanks for the community suggestion, will definitely take a look at it ?

You’re eliminating a lot of good programs in order to avoid the GRE.

Yeah I know. Im not necessarily avoiding taking it, I just don't think ill have time to study and take it this year before most of the school deadlines

I don’t think you can really study for the GRE. It’s good to understand how the test is administered. For example, when I took it in 80s I was glad that I knew that no one ever finishes a section before they called time. The review programs are selling a product.

Hi my friend! Currently im half way into my CRNA program. Don't worry too much about the GRE. My program doesn't require it, and a lot of programs are phasing it out as well.

As for your stats, I feel like the only thing that might be a slight disadvantage for you is your amount of experience. Usually, most programs say a minimum of 2 years, but many come in competitive with 3-4 years. As for me, I had only 2.5 years, and I believe 2 other kids in my class had just the minimum of 2 years, so it is doable.

Your GPA might stand out a bit for them. Usually the lowest we accepted here was 3.5-3.6, but as long as you're able to explain to them your graduate classes, I think you will be fine. D

o you mind me asking what your CCRN score is? You stand out well if you do well on the CCRN (at least in my program) Usually a competitive score is >100 questions correct.

Another piece of advice is showing them you have leadership abilities, I did preceptorship for a bit, as well as received employee of the month.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I think your chances to get an interview is pretty good, and if not ^ the above is something that you can tweak a bit.
