Hi, I have been a CNA for 13years. I recently was accepted into a RN program but unfortunately I had to stop due to personal reasons. I'm looking to challenge the LVN exam in CA! Has anyone been through this process or can anybody recommend any study help aides to pass the exam! Does anyone live or work in California, as a LVN, particularly in southern, California. What is the pay and what books did you use to help you study?

Did you complete any clinical or theory in the RN program? The method 3 instructions are very specific on the BVNPT website

Yes, the instructions are very clear. I do not live in the state of CA , so I'm concerned about whether are not the boards with vary from state to state. Also I completed Med-surg 1 only. That was 5 years ago. So I need a little refresher course on the material. I have bought several books: Kaplan and just recently retook Pharmocology to refresh as well. I'm not sure if thats enough. Are you a nurse if so what kind. Are you in Ca, if so could you help me with any recomendations.

The boards do "vary from state to state." If you successfully get licensed as an LVN in CA by challenging the boards as a CNA who meets the additional requirements, you will not be able to endorse that license to any other US state. CA is the only state that offers that option, and other states don't recognize that license because individuals licensed via that route have not met the educational requirements established by all the other states for LVN/LPN licensure. If you want to live and work in CA (only), that's fine, but, if you want to practice anywhere else other than CA, that option won't work for you.

Like the poster above you will be issued a license only valid in CA. Not eligible for endorsement to any other US states. Not eligible for employment in a federal facility or other employers that are required to hire nursing school graduates. Often not eligible for LVN to RN transition programs as you won't have the necessary classroom and clinical hours in all required areas.

You have sufficient, verifiable paid cna experience in all the mandated areas? L&D, pediatrics, acute care med/surg, psych, geriatrics? Very few candidates do as they have often only worked in one area such as psych & LTC do no acute care, pediatrics or L&D.

Proceed if you plan on working in CA but know the job market is tight and in some areas unemployment of nurses is 47%. You may have difficulty finding work if competing against Filipino BSN grads who challenged LVN and traditional LVN graduates.

If you only took med surg 1, do you have sufficient paid hours in L&D, pediatrics, geriatrics & psych/mental health? If not you won't be eligible. Only completing med-surg 1 of an prelicensure RN program is not sufficient to cover all content areas. Completing the course 5 years ago puts you at a disadvantage as much has changed & evolved with the knowledge base and medications. Is your former school willing to sign off on the bvnpt forms?
