CEU

When you complete an approved CUE, you should get a certificate that you can print or save. You only have to show proof of CUE completion if you are audited, but anyone can expect to be audited at any renewal. I personally keep hard copies of my CEU certificates as well as electronic copies when possible.

As you go along you may advance your practice and even get certified in something or other. Save all those certificates (I scan mine and keep them electronically in the cloud, but whatever works for you) because you will always have to have them for audit if asked.

There's another CURRENT post from an LVN who is actually being audited by her BON for CEU proof. Thy DO randomly select nurses for audit. She prob was just one of the ones to be audited (like being summoned for jury duty).

She doesn't have a certificate of completion that one usually receives when the post-test is completed. She missed printing it out altho she has other proof of trying to complete her program units. She's now worried.

But to answer your question - it's usually just a statement on the renewal application that asks if you met your state's CEU requirement. You must answer HONESTLY as there's ANOTHER statement that asks if you attest to answering honestly on your appl renewal yadda, yadda, yadda.

You need to be able to prove that you've met your obligation. It just boils down to SAYING your honest, but knowing that you COULD be audited.

Don't quite know what the ramifications are, but FALSIFICATION of a renewal application comes to mind. Could that result in a license being pulled? Maybe. Or a fine? Just don't know.

One more question. Are we doing the same CEU every renewal period?

I believe the expectation is that CEU content is to vary. I guess that the point could be made that if programs took a definitely different approach to the same broad topic that it MIGHT count. Like one program could be counted for 'dietary management approaches' to obesity while another program might address 'psychosocial ramifications of Fat Shaming in juveniles' in obesity. Those 2 programs would have to have very clear different content material. I would definitely have to check that out.

I just picked different topics that interested me. Easy to make enough points.

I also think that some states allow some different methods for CEU acquisition, like publishing a scholarly research article or taking some certain classes for further degree. Again you'd have to check that out. The number of required mandatory units may also vary from state to state.

If you hold multiple nsg licenses from different states, you can 'double count' the credits. There's a big IF here - the education program provider must be approved by whomever requires the credits. Not all CEU programs are equally approved by everybody. (If I remember from a while back, Florida and Illinois, may have special quirks. ??? )

Just be aware that there are CEU credits that are for required for re-LICENSURE. That differs from credits that may be needed for other reasons like continued certifications.

Now I may be wrong on this (and I will stand corrected) but I think advanced practice nurses follow their own regulations re credits needed for their advanced practice credentialing.
