Jan 18, 201115 yr Hey!Is anyone applying for the RN program that starts Fall 2011?I'm going to apply for South. Last I checked, they didn't have the application packets yet. I hope they get them soon! Do other campuses have them?It would be great to get some discussion started. Thanks everyone!
Jun 3, 201115 yr Hi Sewnmom,I never used the Skills Assessment book at all; in fact, I never even bought it. To be honest, I hardly even used the Nursing Fundamentals Book either (I rented mine-- which reminds me, I need to send it back this month lol), although some of the lecture test questions will come from there. So, it can only help to get it. Other than that, def. get the drug book (technically, you COULD get through without it- but drugs are a BIG part of nursing and you will make a lot of drug cards during clinicals). I personally LOVE the Med-Surgical Nursing Book-- it has a HUGE amount of information, a lot of which, while it might be extraneous for nursing 101, will be very handy for doing pathophysiologies that you also will be assigned in clinicals. You can get it for $30-40 on Amazon. com or other sites. I know that in my clinical group, some people didn't get it, only to come around and buy it toward the end of the semester as they realized how handy it is. It is also very convenient for when you get into doing Nursing Diagnoses-- you will see why. :) Also, get the Nursing Diagnoses Book. These are the only books I got, and I did fine. :)As always, thank you for the info Jason! I have a question, though. Did you buy your books before classes started? If so, how did you know which ones to get?
Jun 5, 201115 yr Hi,The only book I got beforehand was the Fundamentals of Nursing. This was the one book that the lady registering me from the nursing department had really said was the most important. She said the rest would be up to the instructors, so I played it by ear.A lot of those books you really don't need, though of course it wouldn't hurt to have them either.
Jun 10, 201115 yr Hi my name is Molly and im attending CCAC Boyce day program for fall 2011. I just found out I got in two days ago due to the extended deadline ( I wasn't planning on applying until spring 2012). I have not recieved my packet yet and am really nervous about trying to get everything done in the next two months. Any advice from those who have their packets? also I live in the Allegheny area near main campus, is there anyone else that will be commuting to Boyce in the fall from the downtown area? Thanks!
Jun 10, 201115 yr Does anyone know what NCLEX book they use at Allegheny campus? I’m in the NRN 200 class and I’m not sure what book they used in 101 and 102.
Jun 12, 201115 yr I don't know anything about them having an Nclex book. In 101, we had ATI testing books-- they are provided by the school as part of tuition/fee charges a few weeks into the program. You take a test toward the end of the semester-- passing the first time is not required (most of them didn't pass first time) so you take it again at home on your own time until you get a 90%. You don't fail the program for not passing.
Aug 10, 201114 yr Does anyone know which clinical sites Boyce uses? Just curious as to the locations. Thx!
Aug 11, 201114 yr I'm in the Boyce Night program. For clinical sites, these are the one's I'm familiar with. Maybe someone else can give some more as well..Presbyterian senior care for everyone to start in 101Then move on to the acute care settingUPMC St. Margaret'sShadysidePresbyterianMercyMageeMontifioreAlle KiskiWest PennExcela in GreensburgIn 102 I did a rotation in HealthSouth in Monroeville. I also spoke with another Boyce student who did a round at Forbes in Monroeville. So that list is pretty scattered across the map.Hope that helps.
Aug 11, 201114 yr Where did you go for your Peds rotation? I really want to to Children's Hospital, but I heard they usually use Children's Initiative. I'm in the Boyce Night program. Aug 11, 201114 yr We did Peds this summer, and we all went to Childrens Hospital. Initially some were supposed to go to the institute, but something changed. Never got a full story on that.I think for a normal semester, its one or the other.

I type faster than I write and wondered how many students you saw using their laptops to take notes in lecture? I plan to take a recorder, but If I can take my laptop it would be great.
Aug 11, 201114 yr Laptops in lecture, so far nobody has had an issue with that. Recording the lecture is a different story. One instructor I know of is opposed to recording the lecture. I don't know why. However, that does not stop some people.
Aug 11, 201114 yr Were there mostly power points for lectures? Did you use 3 separate binders for clinical, lab, lecture? I'm just trying to figure out what I should and shouldn't get. I know highlighters are a must! Anything else you know of that would help?
