BSN program online- need feedback please

Published

I have all my prereq's and am debating whether to take classroom program at UT Tyler, or the online program that UTA offers. I am concerned that I won't learn as much by doing my nursing courses online. Can anyone who's in the program give me some feedback & insight? Thanks so much!

The classes are fast and furious but you actually do learn alot. Really it is what you take from it. I like it because it is quick and I am able to get it over with in two semesters. I compare what we do to what my friend is doing in her BSN class at UTH and it is the same work ours just isn't drug out.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're not going to learn anything regardless, you'll just have a few extra letters behind your name.

@commonsense- Are you saying you won't learn anything either route, or just with online courses?

I can only speak about the online program, I don't have experience with the brick and mortar type RN-BSN program. Don't get me wrong, you'll pick up a few nice tidbits of information, but don't count on learning anything that applies to actual bedside nursing care.

hi commonsense,

what about learning how to use the copy and paste function on your computer which we practiced over and over in health assessment? and how to spell words such as "cardiology" that we learned in med term? right now in Vulnerable, i have learned that there are 3 bakeries, 4 jewelry stores, 6 beauty supply stores, and 5 flower shops in my community. so very helpful to me when i am taking care of a sick patient at work.

You will get out of it what you put into it. I do all of my reading so I can truly learn what the instructor means to impart. The material is crammed into a shorter amunt of time, similar to summer classes. I like it better because you get done a lot quicker and spend less time driving and sitting in a classroom. I haven't taken Vunerable yet, but so far, my classes have been informative. Overall, it's a good school.

I am working on my prereqs for the online UTA BSN program. I am learning a lot and feel I am not wasting time commuting and sitting through lectures with the occasional bad professor. I optimize my time and learn the same material that anyone else would in the traditional setting, only I do not have the benefit of lecture which I can find on youtube if needed. You can't ask questions and schedule office time, so I feel you really need to know your stuff! I think many people are shocked when they take online courses, because they think you don't have to work as hard - but in some ways you have to work harder but you can save some time by not commuting daily (for me that is important)!

The clinicals are at a local hospital so you do get to experience bedside student nursing, but the course work is still online. You can post here on Allnurses in the college section here under UTA and get more insight.

Do you have to be a resident of TX to do the online BSN?

No you don't have to. I live in California
