Brookhaven Nursing Program

Hello everyone!! I have been doing my support courses for the last year and a half and I'm going to apply for the nursing program at Brookhaven this month. Though I'm not really stressing about it I am a little worried. This is my 3rd attempt at college and the first 2 times I did horrible!! Since I made the choice to go to nursing school in Summer of 2009, I've brought my GPA up from 1.76 to 3.0. And, all my grades in my support classes have been A's and B's except 1, Nursing Pathophysiology. I made a C in that class and it would have been a B if I had not made one mistake at the end of the course. So, my question is does anyone think that C in that class will hinder me much? If anyone can offer any insight it would be great. Thanks!!

When you are learning the skills in nursing school, do you practice on each other? In Medical Assisting school they would have us practice on dummies until we got the skill down well (like blood draw) and then we practiced on each other.

Also, this might be a really dumb question, but are you allowed to practice at home on your family? I am assuming not because they would want your instructor to be there to help you if you mess up but again, just curious :)

We were instructed never to practice invasive skills on people at all. We did practice physical assessment, BP, pulses points, etc on people. everything else, we practiced on vitaman, the fake person. :D

Hey I'm pretty sure this question has been asked before, but this thread is so long I can't find it! Do they let y'all use voice recorders in lectures? I think that would be really helpful in case I miss something while taking notes and/or can't understand my crazy abbreviations while writing! :)

I depends on the teacher. some teachers record it for you and post it. just be sure to ask before hand.

Thanks JM! Were laptops allowed? I know that was asked too but got some conflicting answers.

we were allowed to have laptops after some argument, but then the privilege was taken away because some students weren't able to stay on task. so first semester and second semester we were able to use them, but after that we didn't. /: i think the semester that started after us weren't allowed to have them at all, but i am not positive about that.

Congrats to all the students who start this Fall!!! I am entering my fourth semester this fall, and wanted to let you all know - if you have questions I would be happy to try and help answer them! I can remember when we started first semester how overloaded I was! Also - I will be at success camp (towards the end) with other 3rd and 4th semester students to answer questions. Enjoy the tail end of your break because once you start it blazes by!

Does the nursing program have the same 'rule' that most other nursing programs have where if you get less than 75% on a test you get kicked out? Or less than 75% as an overall grade in a semester?

What about check offs? Do you only get one chance and if you don't pass you fail the course?

Are any of y'all who are entering the program doing this as a second degree? I have a previous BA and have gotten a little nervous reading the posts on here about financial aid nightmares... I know I probably won't be eligible for too much federal financial aid in terms of grants or unsubsidized loans, but I'm hoping private loans will be an option? I've been doing a little bit of research on them but I don't normally see Brookhaven listed as an eligible school... can any of y'all currently in the program or about to start offer me any reassurance on that? :) Thanks!

I have a previous bachelor's degree and am currently in the Bhaven program. I'm ineligible for financial aid because of my prior degree. I simply pay out of pocket for all my school expenses. I haven't investigated the private loans available to me. Its my backup plan for spring semester if needed.

Oh man that is not good news for me! Sallie Mae here I come... I really can't afford it out of pocket, but I've done so much to get in at this point, I'll be crushed if I can't go because of finances!

Here's hoping some of you who got in are still subscribed to this post! Quick question - I'm reviewing Pharmacology so I'm prepared (hopefully) in January, and I'm just wondering if any of the info that is more specific to the nursing process is reiterated during the program. I bought a set of drug flashcards and have been reviewing methods of action for all types of drugs, but I'm wondering how in depth I need to go with the different considerations during administration, assessment, etc...

Any advice on this? :)
