I'm a first year nursing student..School starts in 2 weeks. Should I purchase all new books because of access codes or is it ok to rent books?

email your teachers and ask if you need the codes. I, personally, never needed them and saved a ton of money buying used off of Amazon. Before renting, be sure to check to see if you are using the same book over multiple semesters. If you are, then it's generally cheaper to buy the textbook rather than rent it for 2+ semesters. My med-surg book we use all 4 semesters and my ob/peds book we used for 2 semesters...

For my program, we're graded based on completion for all of the online stuff. Generally access codes will only work completely if you have a new code. So, while I don't need it for a grade, I needed it because you must complete all assignments even if they are not worth points. Definitely ask your professors. Good luck!

Some of my used books that I purchased still have the codes unused in them. I'm also a first time nursing student and didn't worry about buying the books new.

I have always used Bookrenter.com or Banes & Noble for renting but it's wise to check with your professor to see if any of the syllabus is graded for online content. I have rented books before that say they have the online access code but in the fine print they actually do not rent out the code...just something to be aware of. What I've done before is to rent the actual book and then order the online access code independently through Amazon. Most of the time renting works out great and other times you'll find page discrepancies with older versions but it's not something you can't fix if you find you don't have what you need. Renting sure aves an awful lot of money.

I had the same thing, some of the books I rebought still had codes. But just to make sure that you don't need them it is better to ask your professor.

I bought new the major books, the ones I would be using for the next two years. The minor ones I got used and saved money. I talked to students that were a semester or two ahead of me and asked what books they really used, how often, etc.
Our classes start Monday morning the 22nd...I'm so ready to just get going :-)
Best of luck to all of us!!
