Beginning of year staff talk

This is my first year as a junior high nurse... My principal has me scheduled to address the staff during one of our many beginning of the year inservices. Any suggestions on things to discuss at the start of year with the teachers staff?

If not I would let them know you are accessible, this is when I take lunch, when to send kids down, what you will be looking for to send a kid home, that yes, you have tampons and pads, that you expect a pass and will send student back to then with a pass, to speak to you privately about any medically fragile kids and their care plans etc if appropriate.

thanks farawyn! That is very helpful information. No specific guidelines, just the general "talk to them about clinic procedures."

I go over the general things including proper techniques when dealing with bodily fluids. How to contact you, forms the may see clinical process etc. I also remind staff to make sure to communicate health information they may receive. I have assistants , so I communicate info about who and what they do. I know Im forgetting stuff off the top of my mind. I have an outline on my work computer i use.

I do an "introduction to the clinic" during our preplanning week each year introducing myself, my available hours and basically what my purpose is and what I can and can't do for kids. I include things I've thought of during the year that I'd like to add. I basically keep the speech in a file and add/delete my thoughts when they come up.

I also teach an introduction to bloodborne pathogens, teaching standard precautions to laypersons who generally don't know what medical folks know when faced with bodily fluids. Their hope is that they get lucky and aren't faced with vomit, urine, or blood all year but that's not always the case. So I arm then in case they are one of the unlucky few.

In addition to the above, I have also talked about food allergies and Epi-pens and protocol in an emergency situation. (We have allergy, seizure, and asthma action plans posted in each classroom, I quickly review/remind staff they are there).
