Bedside Reporting?

We are in a pod system with some private rooms, so we give bedside report by default. After report, we do a safety check and make sure IVs are good, ambu and suction is functioning and ready, code sheet at bedside.

We do the bulk of our report outside the patient room against the patient chart, and then go in to do and chart a double check of lines/fluids/milk.

We have always done bedside, even before it was the new big thing. If there are parents there and there is sensitive info they don't know yet, we will point to the info in SBAR and that means we will discuss it further later. We also let the parents know we are doing handoff and please don't interrupt us during as we don't want to forget anything, but they are welcome to ask us anything after. Most go get coffee or to the bathroom. We don't allow extra visitors during report.

I especially love it with our new staff...you can really go over lines, access, dressings, OET measurements, vent settings,infusion rates, etc. We also use it to teach if it something new to them (all our newbies are assigned a resource person also). You also get a great visual of that kid.

I know people hate it, but with our guidelines it goes so smoothly.

When I was a bedside nurse, I worked in a facility that had private patient rooms so we generally gave report right outside the rooms. For the first 6 months I worked there we were in open bays and we gave report wherever there was a computer free and gave a onceover on the babies afterwards. I think kicking parents out of the unit just to give report is cruel.
