Backup plans for BSN

Hi!

I am going to start CUNY Hunter in the Fall. I will not be able to apply to the nursing program until the Spring 2007 semester. I hear that it is a tough program to get into so I am worried. They look at all grades and earlier in my college career I was stupid and never withdrew from 2 classes so I received F's in those classes. The other grades are mostly in the B-B+ range. I have tried to have those F's removed but the professors will not budge.

I am worried that after putting in the time and money that I will not get accepted into the program. At this point this is my only option to get my BSN since I cannot afford a private university.

Does anybody have any backup plans if they do not get into the nursing program at there current school?

Do yourself a favor and apply to several schools, not just one. I would look at "safety" schools and "stretch" schools. If you are mobile, consider programs outside of your local school; remember, people can transfer to different schools. You can also get more financial aid if you fill out the FAFSA financial aid form, especially for private universities.

Talk to an admissions/school counselor at your school. Find out how they view the "F"s. If there's an essay to the nursing application, you will need to address those low grades. You'll also need some strong recommendations from professors that know you can do the work. I would strongly suggest you look at more than one school for alternatives. Since I don't know your exact circumstances, you really need to talk to a school counselor who can advise you. Good luck!

I don't understand the question. What program are you trying to get into if it isn't the BSN and what does a private university have to do with it?

I agree, it cant hurt to apply to some different programs, who knows maybe by doing that it will open up some new possiblities for you. Have you thought of pursing an ADN? The degree (barring any waitlists) is 2 years and then you would be elible to sit for the NCLEX and become an RN. After getting some experience you could try an RN to BSN track and those i think are only a year or so (not sure I didnt go that route but that is what I hear)....there are so many ways to get to an RN!!!

I agree with the posts that suggest applying to different programs. Why pile the eggs into one basket, right? You didn't say what courses you got the Fs in. Were they science classes like A&P, chemistry, or micro?? Some nursing schools don't like to see Ds, Fs, Ws, or Is for any of these classes. Check with nursing programs around the city to see what their policies are about this. True, nursing schools are competitive but you can't know that you won't be accepted unless you try. I also don't understand why are you thinking that a private college is your only alternative if you don't get into CUNY. Don't overlook community college nursing programs when you're filling out applications. A community college may not sound as glamorous as a university but nursing is nursing is nursing---in the end you're going to sit the same NCLEX exam as the student who went to Harvard or Yale.

i am going to sound redundant but if you can apply to different schools...do it!!! trust me! i am from texas and it was so hard to get into their schools. the first time i applied was for spring 2005. i applied to 4 schools in texas. none of them accepted me. i tried again for fall 2005...this time i applied to out of state schools...including the same texas schools...i got 2 acceptances from the out of state schools and unfortunately the texas schools rejected me again...but if you can...apply out of state!!! or what someone else said get your adn degree first then go back and get your bsn.

I agree! a nurse is a nurse no matter how you got there!!! From what I have heard and read from these posts there isnt a pay difference between an ADN and BSN as long as you are doing the same job.

The two F's were in some electives that I took. I cannot remember which ones exactly but they were not any science/math related courses.

When I am applying to Hunter I will also apply to some community colleges as well.
