Attrition: Higher or Lower in a BSN program

Hi all!

I was just curious about the dropout/fail rates in a BSN program vs. an ADN program? I've really only spoken with students in the ADN program, but there seems to be a higher attrition rate in the ADN. Can anyone in a BSN program share their experiences?

Thanks in advance!

Kris

Hi there,

I'm in a BSN program, final semester actually, and we only have one person that dropped, (to my knowledge). We started with 64, and now have 71 that should graduate in April. (There were a few people that either had to take a semester off or take a semester over - including me).

I don't know, it seems to me that BSN programs have a higher retention rate. The BSN programs are more expensive, they are in school longer from the beginning (more prereqs and gen ed in general). There would be so much to lose if you just dropped out imo.

ah, well I graduated an AD program and we lost more than 50%, and even in an AD program, it's a lot to lose. We had two dropped in 4th semester (there are 5 to the nursing program). We ADN students, too, spend a lot of time and money on pre-reqs and nursing courses, as well as clinical hours. It's a lot to lose no matter which program you are washed out from.

In my ADN program we lost only two people. The instructors said that was the best rate ever in their program. I know of one person who failed NCLEX, but there may have been more. Most of us graduated, and most of us passed NCLEX.

One can only speculate and listen to rumors. Are there any studies that prove one has a higher dropout rate than the other?
