I think you need to have at least a 3.8 and 85% or more on the TEAS V in order to be competitive. If you don't have this, don't waste your time and money on the application process. Most students applied have a 4.0 GPA and very high TEAS scores. It is hard to get in now especially with the TEAS test. The NET test was easy compared to this one.

This post comes off rather condescending and dimissive to someone looking for support and information. The point of this site is to support like-minded individuals in their particular situation as it applies to their career in nursing.

Telling someone not to waste their time or money on the application process because of your perception as to where they rank in the advancement process is at the very least a bit presumptuous.

You don't KNOW what the cutoff is - no one does at this point. Why not wait until the results are out for those who have applied for advancement before making broad statements?

You indicated that MOST students applied with a 4.0 and very high TEAS scores. In another posting you indicated that you knew 30 people who scored 87% on the TEAS and had a 4.0. If the number of applicants truly is 175 as has been previously posted, those 30 people you know would account for less than 20% of the total number of applicants. That's hardly MOST from where I sit. Frankly, most of the people I've talked with or heard about DON'T have a 4.0 GPA and scored UNDER 87% on the TEAS. Just so you know, I do have a 4.0 and scored higher than 88%, so I'm not being defensive, I'm just offering my perspective.

You indicate the NET exam was easy compared to the TEAS. Personally I don't know, I didn't take the NET. Perhaps you did and so you can speak to that, but in the end, it shouldn't make that much difference. If the NET exam WAS that much easier, it just meant the cutoff score for those with a 4.0 GPA would have been higher on the NET to be advanced. It's all relative in the end. TEAS or NET combined with the GPA to come up with an advancement score.

yelephant - it is true that this is a very competitive field and that you will have to work hard for advancement. That just makes it so much sweeter when you do advance! Don't give up and don't let anyone tell you that you're not going to be competitive - again, at this point no one really knows. Work hard, study hard, retake the TEAS and bump your score up if you're not happy with what you got the first time. I have monitored the Fall 2010 thread since it began, and if you go through all the messages, there really aren't that many people who have posted their GPA and TEAS scores, so it's really hard to tell at this point. I agree with your statement - there are many people in the same boat. You do your best, watch your critical class scores and be confident.

I am telling the truth. This program is very competitive now. There are 80 seats. You must have high status and ranking to apply. Let be realistic, would you apply with a 3.5 and 80% on the TEAS? There are many people with 3.8 and high TEAS scores. People tend to score in the upper 80's. I am not trying to scare people but it is the truth. Remember you are competing with the best people!

I've also monitored threads from other programs around the country and in general, the scores on the TEAS V were NOT in the upper 80's in many cases from what I've seen. In fact ATI Testing acknowledges that the average scores are down almost 10 percentage points from the TEAS 4. Look at the program percentile scores to get a better idea of the ranges nationwide. Now I'd like to think we're exceptionally smart here at ASU, but I've got to believe at the end of the day, the range of scores here will reflect what is seen across the country.

Most importantly, we don't know what kind of GPA or TEAS score yelephant has, so it's impossible to tell where he/she fits into the discussion. But even if we did have those details, unless you've compiled the GPA's and test scores from all 175 applicants, you can't know for sure where yelephant or (Ryonaki or wantanabe) will eventually end up. The only "truth" at this point is that it is extremely difficult to get in to the program, beyond that, no one really knows for certain.

Yes, I would! Why would you spend years taking pre-reqs only to end up not applying just because you didn't think you had a good chance??? Apply, apply to other places, and keep on applying till you get in somewhere!

Remember that many people apply to more than one program so if they have a 4.0 and high test scores, the odds of them getting into multiple schools is good and that then frees up seats for the alternates.

Anyway, I say go for it! I agree with the previous poster...don't be such a Debbie Downer. We get enough of that stress just from school in general:smokin:

Please don't bring NAU into the ASU discussion. Seriously, I live in AZ for my entire life and never heard of NAU before. I googled it and found out that NAU nursing program is not that HARD to get into. Many students are applying to this program because it is easy to get into. FYI students applied to ASU nursing program will never give up their seats because IT IS THE TOP PROGRAM IN AZ!

Obama would say your information is "MISGUIDED" In general, if you spent the past 2 years working as hard as you could then you should have a 4.0 GPA and a high test score. If you have a low status, you could still try and apply. However, it would be pointless and waste of time. Instead, you should try to retake classes or improve your test scores. Remember don't engage in a battle unless you are certain that you can win.

i guess i’ll start with ryonaki’s response to yelnikmcwawa’s thoughtful post. for someone who tries to come across as well informed and all knowing, it’s a little hard to believe you’ve lived in arizona all your life but you had to google “nau” because you’d never heard of it before. all your life in arizona and you’ve never even heard of nau? in case you were unaware, there’s also another university in southern arizona called university of arizona. it’s located in a city called tucson……google it. that your google search resulted in your new found knowledge that nau nursing is not that hard to get in to is not hard to believe. through google searches, you can also find information indicating that the oil spill problem in the gulf of mexico is a hoax, we never actually went to the moon and that same moon is actually made of cheese. in fact, if you look, you’ll also find discussions that indicate asu’s nursing program is not the top program in az! now understand, i am applying to asu’s nursing program and am proud to be a sun devil, so i’m all for talking up the program, but what do you have to back up your assertion that asu is the “top program” in az? i mean other than google. one way to measure a program’s success is by looking at nclex pass rates for first time applicants. if you had done that, you would know that asu’s are not bad, but the other university i mentioned above has had consistently higher pass rates since 2004 (and it really pains me to write that). so on an objective basis, i’m not sure you can honestly say asu’s program is “tops” – good, but maybe not “tops”. yelnikmcwawa’s comments regarding alternates are well founded. in years past, asu has also maintained an alternate list for those who just missed the cut, allowing for coverage for those who pulled out of the program for one reason or another. if you search the forums on this site, you’ll see a number of postings from applicants who got into the program in this manner. i also know there have been a few applicants in years past who qualified on gpa and test scores, but were eliminated because their applications were incomplete.

ryonaki responds to one of my previous posts by referencing president obama’s “misguided” statement (as it applied to arizona sb1070). i assume this technique is used to provide credibility by association. unfortunately, the context is so far removed from this discussion that it simply falls flat. ryonaki is selective in what was included from my original post, then comments on that selection exclusively. that works sometimes, but when the reader can simply scroll back up the page to read the original posting in its entirety, it exposes ryonaki’s weak arguments. unless this individual has inside information related to advancement, there is no way to know where the cutoff is, and therefore not submitting an application would be foolish. pointless and a waste of time? i think not my friend. your final statement that you should never enter into a battle unless you know you will win is extraordinarily telling. i’ve never looked at this process as a “battle”. a challenge perhaps, but a battle? and being confident is a great quality, but if you only participate in processes that you know you’ll win, what’s the point?

i am a single mother and born in the u.s. i do not need support and assistance from others. i know i can get in without breaking a sweat. i do not care about your comments. we will see who get into the program! maybe i will see you at the finish line? ryonki, i too was surprised to hear that you have lived in az for your whole life and didn't know what nau was!!! it's one of only 3 state universities in the whole of arizona, so how could you possibly be working towards getting into nursing school and not have researched all of your options????

take a look at the facts. yes, it is easier to get into nau's nursing program but that has nothing to do with the quality of their program, it has to do with their physical location! asu is the only state university in a metropolitan area that consists of 5 million people. nau's metropolitan consists of under 130,000. so therefore they have a much smaller application pool. i am in class with some brilliant students and i'm proud to be their classmate!

i, too, live in phoenix but go to school in flagstaff because i researched my options and found that nau had an application cycle that opened 6 months earlier than asu's, once i had finished my pre-reqs. so, i applied just to increase my odds of getting in somewhere. well, i did and now i will be laughing to the bank as i figured out how to bypass all the waiting that is going on down in phoenix. and i, too, have a child. he’s 4. plus i work still! so needless to say, commuting to nau once a week for school has been hard, but i figured out how to make it work and now i'm done! and need i say i made dean's list every semester :yeah:goal reached, and i reached it much sooner than i could have with any other options down in phoenix!

mayo respects nau program enough to offer a contract with us for capstone. in fact, i got one of their placements and will be doing it in their emergency department this fall. who knows...maybe i'll see you there. good luck!
