Associates Degree Nurses

Published

I am a pre nursing student in South Florida 3 clasess away from starting the nursing program. How easy/hard is it to find a job in a hospital with an ASN? A BSN is my ultimate goal but i want to start working sooner than later. I haven't worked since having my daughter 2 1/2 years ago! I am afraid that i won't be able to find much work with just an ASN...any thoughts?? thanks :)

You will find a million threads here on allnurses.com regarding an ASN versus a BSN.

There is an over saturation of nurses.

There is NOT a nursing shortage.

Most hospitals want a BSN because it makes them look good.

You have a better chance of getting a job with a BSN versus ADN.

It's probably going to depend a great deal on your location and your program. In my area, there are many employment opportunities for new grads, and my ADN program has an excellent reputation for producing very well-prepared grads who can hit the floor running, so our grads get hired. The big systems want BSNs, but they will hire ADNs who commit to getting their BSNs within a certain number of years (I've heard 3 - 5). Good luck!

There are problem a few hundred of these threads on this BB. Perhaps, you could review them for information.

As stated before, it depends on where you are. Where I graduated from, as an ADN, I was offered a job. Declined because we were moving out of state. Most of my graduating class all have jobs now. Here where I'm at, can't find a job to save my life.

@sunshinedaisy sending pixie dust your way! Keep hope alive lol

Thanks slinkyhead! I applied to a few new grad positions, and going to a job fair this coming Friday. If none of those pan out I am putting the job search on hold for a few months. I am hoping to have surgery in April, so will start back after that!
