Associate Degree Rn?

Hey how did it go whats the job market for adn in virginia i plan on getting my bsn but not until i move there and get settled

Most hospitals in Northern Virginia and D.C. have magnet status and any new nurse must have a BSN to gain employment. You can look down south or any that do not have magnet status. It is getting very competitive and most nurses are graduating with their BSN. Even the hospitals that only hire BSN prepared nurses are very competitive when hiring new graduates.

There are plenty of home health care agencies and nursing homes that will hire ADN's.

tatfurutern- it all depends on what part of VA you are moving to. If you are moving to northern VA like DC, reston, tyson's corner, falls church, etc. it is hard to find a job as an ADN and you usually have to complete a residency program to get your foot in the door. If you are coming to the richmond, charlottesville, or roanoke, VA/southwest VA, they hire new grad ADN's all the time! It all just depends on where you are moving to. Good luck :)

Your post is 100% correct, although even in southern VA there will be RN-to-BSN in x number of years requirements attached - some are more enforced than others. When the next shortage hits in a few years, I suspect the BSN fretting will abate a bit.

VANurse2010 you are correct. the HCA hospitals here do require that you start a BSN program within 2 years of your hire date and you must complete it within 5 years! I believe a lot more hospitals will be going to this within the next few years :)

I pity anyone having to work for HCA, but that's another post. Personally, given how crappy the quality of life is in many rural parts of Virginia, I find it a bit ridiculous that they are trying to force people to take on so much debt - and these are in areas where there actually *is* a nursing shortage. Some hospitals are going full bore with it, while others are backing off a bit as they realize they won't have much of a staff by 2019 if it's enforced.

I am workig for HCA west FL division but they still have LPNs and ADNs here in Florida. Which area are you guys in?

Jay jay I am in southwest VA. They hire adns you just have to start a BSN program within 2 years of hire and complete it within 5 years from your hire date but they don't hire any LPNs

It really depends on the area. Especially if you are in an upstate side. Because here they still hire adns, and they do not require bsn after 2 yrs of hire.
