APPLYING TO RN PROGRAMS! Personal Statement Help

Would contact someone where you are applying for factual information. Someone on here could say they applied and wrote something totally incorrect. And the NP part...That is fine, but you are not a RN yet. This will be hard enough on its own. You are applying for a BSN program not an NP program. Just remember that...why do you want to be an RN. The NP talk is cart in front of the horse.

Well, to begin with, in terms of the statement format (length, word count, font etc) you should be able to find out on the university's nursing program page. In terms of what to put into the statement will, of course, depend on the length of your statement. If you are asked to write a one page statement, needless to say, you will need to be short and sweet. If there is no indication as to how long the statement should be, I would advise to keep it 2 pages maximum. (Nobody has time to read statements longer than two pages. Remember, you are not the only one applying to the program).

I feel like the things you mentioned you would want to write about are good ideas. And like PP mentioned, concentrate on your experiences in RN program. You can definitely write about an experience/person that inspired you to pursue nursing. Talk about the skills that you possess will be a valuable assess for a nurse. Talk about why you want to get into the specific program. It is very important to research the mission/philosophy of that program that you can connect with your own. They want to see that you have passion, skill set, and most importantly, you will be a great fit for their program.

To structure it, try to write clearly and reflectively about:

How you arrived at your decision to go into nursing;

Why, specifically, you want to be an adult, child, mental health or learning disabilities nurse;

​How your experience and research has contributed to your understanding of the realities and challenges you'll face;

What it is about your skills, attitudes, values and character that make the profession right for you;

Anything you feel is especially relevant about your academic studies or maybe a project you've undertaken.

Then, when you write about all this in your statement, try to explain and reflect on:

What you've learned about some of the realities of nursing, the challenges, constraints and frustrations you'll face (rather than the rewards) and the skills, qualities and values you'll need;

How you've demonstrated some of those skills, qualities and values yourself through your experience, extracurricular activities, personal interests or achievements.
