I'm Thinking about applying to crna school this fall for fall 2008 admission... I will be a new RN this May working in the CVICU at a large, university hospital. To soon to apply?? or wait till next fall to apply??? Still haven't taken the GRE's.. and still have to do stats...

Well - you're going to have a bit of a problem there since you have two main obstacles: 1) you are a not a nurse and 2) you have no experience. That will make getting your professional references as an ICU RN impossible and you won't get any interviews. I know my school is interviewing for 2008 now and some schools around here are interviewing for 2009. Might want to wait until you have your minimum experience and will be in a position to get past the interview.

I would think most places want everything completed prior to seeing your application on their desk. Like the previous poster said about references. Though they may not appear to be very important right now. I think that a major part of getting in is having 3-4 good references that are backing you, saying yes this is one of your best candidates. The other thing is experience, you need at least a solid year before they will even talk to you you. Slow down, enjoy life alittle right now.

Ok, so I have to echo what pfh and japa have said. I noticed from your other posts that you have an MS and another BS, so academically you should be set. If you really want in to a CRNA program, be eager to shine on your unit for at least a year. Trust me, you don't want to go in announcing that you are CRNA bound and are just "doin' time" on the unit, unless you have an incredible staff and manager who are keen on training you and letting you go in one year. A mediocre reference could be the difference in seeing an admissions committee and getting a "we are sorry to inform you" letter. I know that this year my program never interviewed 20 people who were qualified, most likely for this very reason. If you have some stellar references, apply this year. If not, take the time to cultivate them and apply next year.

Good luck either way!

Thank you for your replies, this helps me decide how early I am going to apply also. I don't want to give them any reason to reject my app.

Just out of curiosity is CRNA school hard; as in content is hard or just a large volume of work? Do the two years include your internship or two yr of school work plus clinical experience?

Hmmm .... don't think this is the right thread for this one. Check out the faq at the top - where all the "sticky" links are. They should answer these types of questions.

But generally speaking - almost all programs are 2.5 years with a mix of clinical and classroom throughout.

i always think it's good to do at least 3 years as an RN first...but that's just my 2 cents...
