Good Evening,
I'm really new here so I hope I can be so bold as to babble on about my day and my nervousness.
Well, after several years of 1 class per semester, I finally turned in my application for my local cc's Spring 15 ADN program!!! It might seem silly, but this is a dream realized for me, just to actually apply.
Closing date is 08/08 and then a 5/6 week wait, possibly longer according to someone in the office. Herein lies my problem!!!
I spent the drive back to work and most of the afternoon in anxiety. 5-6 weeks seems like forever and it's all I have on my mind..."Will I make it?" Being accepted will completely change my life as I will retire from my job of 24 years to attend school to be a nurse, my dream since I was a young girl. So, this is a HUGE deal for me. I'm so scared of not being accepted. I previously posted about an ancient GPA hurting my cumulative GPA. I spoke to the Admin Asst taking & checking apps and she seems to think I don't have anything to worry about. "However" it depends on how competitive this application pool is. My HESI score is 95 and my GPA is 3.17 (without the 1980's GPA's).
I'm trying to figure out how to handle this wait..this Prayer of course, is #1, and I've sent silent prayers up all day for God to bless my plans and help me accept whatever the outcome is. I just keep thinking about or trying not to think about how utterly disappointed I'll be if I don't make it.
How do you cope with anxious waiting for important news about your nursing goals?

How about applying to another program(s)? Increase your chances of getting in for spring. And great score on the HESI! As far as the waiting game goes...keep yourself busy. Waiting to hear if you got in or not is definitely a killer. Best of Luck!

Find a hobby that can consume you for the waiting period, and apply to other programs if you can. That way you have higher odds of being accepted into a program if you can't get into your original program.

I try to keep myself busy (which is usually pretty easy at first) but the close you get to the end of the waiting period the harder it is to not think about....I just submitted my application today for my first choice program. By mid september I will be camping at the mailbox waiting for an answer.....
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I was so nervous taking the HESI! I'm very thankful for my score.
I don't know why in the world I didn't think about applying other places. I guess I have my heart set on my first choice, but y'all are right that my odds increase, so I'm applying to another program on Monday when their application period opens up.
As far as hobbies, my best friend just got engaged and wants to get married in November, so I appointed myself her wedding planner, lol! That will keep me sidetracked for a while. But, I know I'll be really freaking out when it gets closer to finding out. They let us know by email, so I'll be jumping everytime my phone dings with a new message.
I have an old cross stitch project I need to finish, too. Now would be a good time to break it out.
The second program won't be hard to apply for at all, I have everything I need except having other transcripts sent over. Everything else is done online. They have a required "nursing applicant info" meeting you have to attend, tho.
Thanks again for your replies!
tesouthern: Would you like to wait together? It would be nice to be able to talkto someone who's waiting, too!
Of course....it's always nice to have someone to commiserate with who knows what you are going through. The two other schools that I am applying for have later application periods. So I will be taking the HESI and getting those applications together. I'm dreading another entrance exam (the school I already applied to requires the TEAS V) but I don't want to put all my hopes on my first choice school JUST IN CASE.
Great! Yes, it's nice to have someone know what it feels like. The school I already applied to and the school I'll apply for on Monday both require the HESI. I can't imagine having to take two different exams! I realize now that I shouldn't put all my hopes in just one school. A friend said today that the most important thing is getting into a nursing program instead of getting into the school I want. Makes sense, I just have my heart set on my first choice. When are you taking the HESI? What are the application dates for the other two schools?
One of them has a deadline of the end of september the other is October 15th (I'm really torn on which program is the best for me too :/)
the one I turned in my app for today is an ADN program (and I plan to do a RN-BSN bridge afterwards if I go that route). about a 15-20 minute drive from my house
the one with the october deadline is a BSN program. requires 3 "prenursing" classes that you have to be approved for before you can take them. the approval form is due by oct 15...
If I do the BSN program I will be finished with my BSN an entire semester faster.
if I do the ADN program I will be licensed and able to find a job and work through the last year (having an income sooner instead of just spending money would be nice). And the thought of a shorter drive for the next 2 years is appealing too since I have spent the last 2 years driving 45 mins 4 days a week for school....
ahhh decisions decisions. The third program is another ADN program 45 mins away (at the school i did most of my prereqs at) but is my back up plan if the others don't work out
just trying to cover all my bases
So, the BSN program is for Spring 2015, too? Depending on how long it takes to find out if you've been accepted, you could be accepted into the ADN program already. I wonder how long you have to accept the offer once you find out? My 1st choice ADN is about 20 minutes from home, too. I'm not sure about a RN-BSN bridge due to my age (51 - don't laugh!! lol) and also not wanting more school debt. I looked into the BSN programs, but I feel like I need to not be without work for longer that necessary. I like the shorter drive idea, too!
The 2nd school is a little further, but not too bad. I took some basics there a few years ago. The only thing about this 2nd choice is that I've been told my first choice school has the grads that are preferred for local hospital jobs.
I also applied for the LVN program at my first choice school because I'm so afraid of not getting into the ADN program. I know I will hear something about that in late August and I think I have a pretty good choice of getting into that one. I would be terribly disappointed if I don't make it int ADN, but at least I would be able to start a nursing program. I'm not sure how long you have to accept an offer before they retract it. I don't want to be stuck needing to answer the LVN offer and not yet knowing about the ADN program. I'm dreaming.... lol
Sounds like you have your bases covered very well. Let me ask you, do you think BSN gets less actual "nursing" time than RN? I've heard it's more leadership/scheduling, etc.

The bsn program would start in fall of 15 (the pre nursing classes would be spring 15). I should find out if I get accepted to the ADN program before that deadline. But I'm not sure I have to accept the spot. I will likely just accept the ADN spot if I get in and take an extra semester to finish my bsn. I think it's good to cover all of your bases because these programs are competitive to get into. I know sever people who went into the LVN program and will do a lvn-rn bridge afterwards. That's one nice thing...There are many options to get to that nursing career.
I don't know about EVERY where....but around here most of the bigger hospitals are moving toward hiring RNs with their BSN and not the ADN. I don't think that it's so much a matter of less nursing time....just a better shot at getting the job you want. But like I said not sure if that's everywhere

What did you do to prepare for the HESI? I am still taking prereqs to apply for my cc's ADN program and I'm sort of nervous about the HESI, just because it costs money and it determines whether or not I'll get into the program. I'm not looking forward to spending over $100 on a book I'm going to use once so I might get one from the library if the books really help. Also, cross stitching is a great activity to pass the time :) Might have to pull out my old projects when the time comes, haha. Good luck though! Your time and effort will pay off in one way or another
